I guess I won't get any winter squash this year... by Aldin

Unless I buy them. I haven't got much room in my yard to grow stuff. The Squirrels' Nest came with a swimming pool that takes up most of the backyard. I usually plant/transplant 3 or 4 winter squash plants, either buttercup or spaghetti. I started some indoors this year and also transplanted some coming up in our small compost pile into my tiny 3ft by 2ft garden space. I had a total of 5 plants, one of which didn't survive transfer from the compost pile.

Emphasis on had. A firetrucking gopher has moved into the neighborhood. I had 3 tiny stubs left this morning out of four plants. One of those plants would started flowering by the end of this week if it hadn't become a gopher appetizer.

And I live in the middle of town and there are too many cats around. So, can't set-up any traps. At this point, there's no point in trying to start over. I've lost nearly a month in Maine's very short growing season, which is too much time to try and make-up with winter squash. (sigh)

Last year, no problem. I got 3 spaghetti and 3 buttercup, which is all I really need for the winter. It's not like the two of us eat it every day. This year, guess I'll pay through the nose at the store if we want squash.

I guess I won't get any winter squash this year...

How about a vertical garden that's not based into the ground where the gophers could get at it?

I, honestly, don't have the time to build anything and it gets very windy on this hill, so it would need to be pretty sturdy. How windy? The house sometimes shakes.

        Very good point...

Worst comes to worst, you could build a sail and fly your house to a better location.
