What kind of prints do you buy? [SURVEY] by SpartaDog

So I've been trying to make more art that is print worthy. I have a few pieces that obviously sell better than others and even those are old now and I know I can do much better. But I'm not totally sure what direction I should be headed in since this fandom is all about custom work vs premade unless you've made a huge name for yourself already. So I have some questions for you guys that will hopefully help me figure things out! Any and all help is much appreciated!

  • Do you buy prints? Why or why not?
  • What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)
  • Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?
  • What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?
  • What do you think is a fair price for an average print?
  • Are there any pieces in my gallery, INCLUDING commissions, you would like to see available as prints?
  • Any other comments?

Thanks for your time! I already have a printing service lined up, I just need to know what to send them!

Do you buy prints? Why or why not?

    • Occasionally. I haven't in awhile due to money issues.

What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)

    • Usually I go more for the quality of the artwork, though fanart and my favorite animal species will catch my attention.

Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?

    • More likely to buy general and mature. I'm pretty sure I've never bought any kind of adult/porn art in any manner. :P

What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?

    • 8.5x11 is a good size. Easy to find a frame, too.

What do you think is a fair price for an average print?

    • About $5-20, depending on size.

Thank you! I'll keep all this in mind!

-Do you buy prints? Why or why not?

Sometimes. There's only so much space on a bedroom wall!

-What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)

Action scenes, dragons, weird creatures, movie poster-like, propaganda-like, Pokemon, Monster Hunter

-Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?

General prints. I'm not one to shove porn all over my walls.

-What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?

Most of mine are poster sized. 11x17 is a good size since I printed my own stuff out around that as a test one time. 8.5x11 might be too small to see at a distance but it also keeps cost down.

-What do you think is a fair price for an average print?

Depends on size and how much you spent to print it! The posters I got were actually at a store and were probably around 10 dollars? But the paper quality is, well, disposable. I would pay more for better quality paper. $20 or more.

-Are there any pieces in my gallery, INCLUDING commissions, you would like to see available as prints?

THIS. Such a cool pose. https://www.weasyl.com/submission/736726/mega-blaziken

    -Any other comments?

I'm weird and prefer pre-made prints over custom. If I wanted custom, I'd take a commission.

    • Link

      Thanks a bunch!

      • A lot of people don't hang their adult artwork on the walls. They keep them in binders and flip through them whenever they want. They also do that with general prints if they don't have a lot of wall space.
      • I will definitely be making prints of Mega Blaziken! It was already on the list, haha!
      • Yes that's what I meant XD Most people prefer getting commissions as opposed to premade prints. I don't think I've ever heard of custom prints? That would be interesting lol
      • Link

I don't buy adult art to begin with, at least not furry adult work. I prefer the real stuff.

I guess it could work if the commission was made for the purpose of being a one off print for the buyer.

        • Link

I suppose? But in that case I'd just treat it like a regular commission and then link them to my printer so they could have it printed themselves XD Oh well lol

Do you buy prints? Why or why not?
-I've bought prints at ACEN, and a couple from someone's storeenvy.

What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)
-All of the ones i have minus one are Teen Wolf related. I do plan to get some Hobbit ones too. So I like fanart. And sharks, the one that isn't fanart is a 'shark puppy' thing.

Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?
-General! I live with my grandparents so. lol I'm not opposed to some porn comics though.

What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?
8.5x11-11x17 are the two i like. I do also like 4x6 for simple little prints

What do you think is a fair price for an average print?

    • Link

      Awesome, thank you!

      • I mentioned above, some people get adult prints and keep them in a binder rather than hanging them up. So if you'd like to get adult artwork that could be an option for you!
      • Wow, I never thought someone would say that one XD I'll see what I can do!
  • Link

    • Do you buy prints? Why or why not?
I sure do! Because I love plastering my walls with gorgeous artwork. I find it inspiring. -looks at bare ass walls- Of course... I need to find a good way to put them up without damaging them....

    • What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)
Mostly fanart, though if I really like the style of something, I will get it. People with unique styles always attract my attention almost as much as people with realistic or semi-realistic styles.

    • Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?
General, though I have a couple pin ups. But definitely more likely to buy general. I like displaying my art after all, and once I figure out how to, I'm going to plaster my place with them.

    • What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?
I like a good variety, though anything bigger than just "piece of printer paper" is preferable.

    • What do you think is a fair price for an average print?
I've spent anywhere from $10 to $80 depending on the print, the size, and the artist, but for something that's 8.5x11 I'd say $20 or so. Seems to be the most common price I've found.

    • Are there any pieces in my gallery, INCLUDING commissions, you would like to see available as prints?

Do you buy prints? Why or why not?

I do! Mostly because I like art and I hate white walls.

What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)

I tend not to buy fanart, not on purpose necessarily, but I suppose it just doesn't grab me most of the time. I tend to be attracted to work with a lot of content in the image, and when I say content I don't mean filled to the brim with figures or stuff, I mean I like well composed images.

Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?

I probably wouldn't buy erotic prints from anyone, but everyone's different. I think mature type work would be fine, artistic nudes never bothered anyone lol.

What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?

Depends on the composition and my wallet. I tend to go for larger prints personally.

What do you think is a fair price for an average print?

it depends on the quality of the print I think. I struggled a lot with printing early on, and I'm sorry to admit that before I knew any better I had sent out some pretty pathetic prints in the quality department. I'm a little wiser now.
Out of your pocket you can expect to pay 6-35 for your prints, depending on the materials and size, and you should charge at least 2-3 times what it cost you, some people go up to 8x, but I think that's a little much personally.

You'd probably want to think about shipping as well. If you sold a plaque mounted piece of art it would be fairly heavy and cost more to ship. But also wouldn't be bendable and ruined in transit.

Are there any pieces in my gallery, INCLUDING commissions, you would like to see available as prints?

I think this one is pretty, but I also think it's the most complete
    https://www.weasyl.com/submission/837868/commission-themanifesto
That 9 hour paint time probably helped.

I also like this stuff, but you'd need to take a truer photo.

    Any other comments?

Not really! But I wish you much luck with your venture :D

    • Link

Thanks a bunch! I already have my printer lined up and they're very reasonably priced. Fortunately I'm only looking for standard prints to bring to conventions. Matted or mounted pieces will be few and far between lol.

I will definitely be asking that commissioner for permission to get prints! I agree, it is currently the most complete piece in my gallery. As for the Rabbit one, I can't legally sell anything with that character. They're copyrighted and they aren't a large corporation like Nintendo or Disney so a) they are actually hurt by the money they lose on it and b) it's much easier for them to track me down XD

      Thanks for your input!

Do you buy prints? Why or why not?
I do! When I can. XP I would love to add more prints to my collection. I like them because I love art and artists, and the paintings and drawings people make are magnificent works of art. (cough cough Syour work cough cough Oi, gotta get this checked out.)

What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)
English Bull Terriers. That's it. I'm a bully whore.

Just kidding, I love a lot of different species. I am easy to please. XP

Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?
No actually. I prefer something that I can put up on my wall for all to enjoy.... But I wouldn't mind getting a just for me type thing. Tasteful mature art is nice, I just tend to be mindful of everyone. XP Especially my mom... Since I live at home... Yeah...

What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?
8.5X11 is pretty perfect. Big enough for detail, but small enough to move or store. That size also means I can have more of them in one place.

What do you think is a fair price for an average print?
I don't mind spending between $5-$15 on a print. Depending on material. If it's a cartstock paper, I know it isn't as durable or costly as a cardboard backing.

Are there any pieces in my gallery, INCLUDING commissions, you would like to see available as prints?
All of it. O_O Give me them all.

Jk, I really love the way you did your Fashionista piece, I would totally put that up on my wall. Like, tame pin ups of various characters and species are really cool.

    Any other comments?
Farta er I mean Sparta is a cool dog. You rock hambone.

    • Link

Like I said above, a lot of people keep their porn prints in a binder if they live with other people XD So that's an option.

      Thanks for the input!

  • Link

Do you buy prints? Why or why not?
I do, but they tend to be print books since I don't have a lot of room to hang them and I tend to lose binders.
What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)
    Fanart, Original characters,
Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?
General to Mature, I can't go hanging up porn in my living room ;D I don't mind bloody stuff or pinups but with a habit of losing binders I tend to either hang or try to store prints I get.
What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?
    8.5 x 11 or 9 x 12. 11 x 17 and up just gets too big for my tastes.
What do you think is a fair price for an average print?
I haven't bought prints in a while, but for something I liked, if I had the money on hand I'd easily drop 10-30$ on a print depending on paper and print quality (I worked at a print shop I can't help it, little things get to me ;~;) . 35-50$ for a larger size (11x17, 13 x19)
Are there any pieces in my gallery, INCLUDING commissions, you would like to see available as prints?
    Dat Soundwave doe
In all seriousness, any and all of your paintings and your non-commission stuff (I feel weird buying prints of other people's commissions?)
    Any other comments?
    Make dat bank, son!

    • Link

Wait, which Soundwave? The one in my sketchbook? But it doesn't have a background or anything D:

  • Link

Do you buy prints? Why or why not?

    • I do! Mostly because I'm an absolute art whore \o /

What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)
-Hmm I've mostly purchased prints of Fanart, but then again I've only been to Anime Cons. Generic Furries/Anthros would be something Id get too depending on the artist!

Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?
-I prefer general or slightly mature prints

What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?

    • 8.5x11 only because they're not too big and not too small and you can buy frames for those sizes easily

What do you think is a fair price for an average print?

    • From what I've seen at anime cons (I've only been to like. 4.) the average price for an 8.5x11 is around10-15$

Are there any pieces in my gallery, INCLUDING commissions, you would like to see available as prints?

    • THE BLAZIKEN AND THE MEWTWO ONE

    Any other comments?

    • Your art is fantastical and once I have money to spend on art you better bet Im buying prints :U
  • Link

Do you buy prints? Why or why not?
Yeah, I buy them at cons and occasionally online, mostly to show support to artists I like (my commission budget is eternally in the red.)

What subject matter do you prefer in prints (i.e fanart of your favorite characters, generic furries/pictures of your favorite species, etc)
Varies considerably; I guess I am drawn more to mood than subject matter specifically, if a piece hits the right note of quirkiness, uniqueness, and skill, I will probably want a print of it.

Are you more likely to buy general, mature (i.e pinups) or adult (i.e porn) prints?
See above. I suppose I own more general-audiences prints because printed furry adult work tends to be more... homogenous? Wolves, foxes, and dragons in 5 standard poses, heh. But I do buy pinups and porn when I find them appealing on the aforementioned levels. The first prints I ever bought were a tattooed naked mole rat and and an antlered doe (artwork © Caliban).

What size prints do you prefer (i.e 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, etc)?
Usually 8.5x11s, they fit nicely in folders when I don't have a frame right away. If I buy larger prints, they typically are already framed/matted and ready to hang.

What do you think is a fair price for an average print?
We-ell, that depends on a lot of variables, since there are a lot of print options: loose, matted, matted and framed; unsigned, signed, signed/numbered by the artist; to say nothing of print/paper quality, etc. and so on. I guess for an un-matted, un-signed 8.5x11" print, I would consider <$8 "too cheap" and >$25 "too expensive". Roughly.

Follow-up later, gotta get to work. /scurry

Awesome, thanks a bunch! (also those prints are adorable)

Gosh you have a lot of art. The body positive dog ladies for sure, some of your shark paintings. I'd say "that painting you did of The Spine" but that's a good point about the copyright issues, suggestion retracted. Probably some other stuff I've forgotten about and couldn't find? WEIRD ALIENS HAVING WEIRD ALIEN SEX.

        Any other comments?
Well you know how much I love writing UNASSAILABLE WALLS OF TEXT but I think I'm good. You're a cool dude, stay frosty.

        • Link

Ahah I dunno if I can do the dog ladies either cuz they were adoptables. I could ask the buyers though.
