Get to know me/FAQ 2015 by stokerbramwell

I like this meme so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon! I did the old "getting to know me" meme when it was fresh, but things change, so it's always nice to get a refresher.

A brief introduction, then, to the bat.

You can call me Stoker. I've been in and around this scene since around 2001, if not longer. I was actually a serious latecomer both to furries in particular and the internet in general, not getting my first PC until my sophomore year of high school. I had kind of been drawn into the fuzzy club before I ever even knew it existed thanks to the Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM and Archie Sonic comic books. I officially entered the fold when I found Yerf and I have never been the same since.

My fursona has always been a bat, inspired both by a lifelong love of the critters and by the adorable art of dingbat dingbat. The name "Stoker Bramwell" comes from the author of Dracula, another one of my lifelong obsessions. Stoker's look has steadily become more vampiric over the years to reflect that.

Philosophically I'm somewhat left of center, sex-positive, feminist and social justice friendly (though I'm not overly fond of the term "SJW" due to some of the excesses associated with it) and a former fundamentalist Christian who has no idea what his spiritual affiliation is anymore. As for gender and sexuality, I'm more or less a cismale who is perfectly comfortable with male pronouns (even if the behavior of other cismales bewilders and alarms me at times). I mostly stick around being a Kinsey 2 as far as sexual orientation goes but some days I can fluctuate anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5. I've lived in several different states, driven through about 75% of the US but rarely left it, and I've been to more furry cons in more locales than any sane individual should. I consider myself somewhere on the non-monogamy spectrum (my crushes are legion) but I'd be hard-pressed to say exactly where. I'm a bit on the kinky side, almost exclusively a Dom, and if I were to go into explaining my fetishes we'd be here all night. I've been married once, am currently single, and am NOT really looking at the moment.

As for contributing to the fandom, I don't fursuit, don't make art, and don't write stories...yet. I have been mostly a creative consumer for the last several years, but I'm trying very hard to work past blocks to become a creative producer, like I was when I was a kid. Please watch this space for more info.

And...that about covers it! Any questions anyone has that I might have missed?

Lucky bugger! Deciding on your fursona so easily! Mine seem to change every week. :p

How did you get into the fandom?

    • Link

I wanted a bat from the start, but it was a foregone conclusion once I saw how adorable dingbat was.

And it was through Yerf, like I said! I found that site on an unrelated Google search and was hooked immediately. Visited every day right up until its demise.

      • Link

I got hooked on VCL first, then Yerf (after it had died and tried to resurrect itself), and then FA, and now Weasyl the Awesome!

For me, its pretty much a foregone conclusion that mine will be one of my Bat Chimeras. I just need to decide on a name and his fur colour/patterns.

Sorry about that "Married once" Business, I hope you can find comfort there. As for the Christian Fundamentalist part, yea, I still feel you there, I have my good days and bad days. Good days, I'm about 90% Christian, 10% Agnostic. Bad days, it's flipped. I mean, that's why I enjoy going to a Catholic church so much, the Mass is just... Refreshing. The church I go to, haven't been in ages, but they always talk about family, and yea, there still mainline Christian, but there just not judgmental about it, and all agro. You'll never hear them telling you how to vote like in the church my parents dragged me to all the time as a kid. I just hope you can find peace and happiness.

It's been long enough that it no longer really hurts. We've even resumed speaking to each other every now and then, which is nice. I used to call myself a Christian agnostic a few years ago, because I just wasn't sure of anything. I'm not even sure enough of the "Christian" part anymore to include it, haha. Maybe I'm just a garden variety agnostic now...

That's alright... I think I may know how you are feeling, and it's... painful. I went through a very dark time a few years ago, I wasn't sure of anything anymore. Well I did find faith again, but I am in no way suggesting that you are lost, or need to do any of that. You have to make your own decisions, but if you ever want my advice you or comfort, I am always here. I'm overjoyed that you are healing over the relationship, and I hope it continues to get better. I may send you a note on a few things later on those subjects and my experiences. But as always, I wish you the very best.

Sonic (both the SatAM and the darker freedom fighter one) were some of my earliest fandoms. (TMNT and Beetlejuice perhaps slightly earlier?)

"a former fundamentalist Christian" I am not sure I ever knew you were fundamentalist, but that I knew you'd been Christian and I wasn't sure if you still were.

    • Link

The SatAM actually is the Freedom Fighter one! The wackier version is referred to as AoStH for "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Also man I LOVED Beetlejuice when I was a kid. It was years before I saw the movie, and I think in many ways I still prefer the cartoon over it.

And yeah, I was a fundie more or less. My family is mostly Southern Baptist and I had a lot of Pentecostal friends for a while. I was very into creationism and Biblical "literalism" (which is anything BUT literal, let me tell you). It took a while to shake all of that off.

I didnt know batmen required FAQs :o

What is yerf and cismale? Just curious - can't do a google search just now....

    • Link

Yerf was an old furry art archive, originally called the SCFA (Squeaky Clean Furry Archive I think). Basically, it was a strictly G through PG-13 rated furry site which also had strict requirements about level of skill before one was allowed to join. Some would say TOO strict, in fact, as it eventually garnered accusations of elitism and snobbery. But I didn't know about any of that, nor the behind-the-scenes drama that killed it, and I still have fond memories of the place. There's an archive of some of hte works that were on it if you go googling, but it's never been 100% restored to its former glory.

As for the prefix "cis" it's just the opposite of "trans." So all I'm saying is, essentially, that my assigned gender identity and preferred gender identity match up with my biological sex and I'm comfortable with all of that.

I swear, you're like my twin. We got into the furry fandom the same way and have the same fetishes and are into the same subjects. Also great to know you're a feminist! We need more men in the world who will proudly say that. ;w; Anyway you're great don't ever forget that, bae. <3

I BELIEVE I AM COMMENTING ON YOUR JOURNAL NOW. QAQ I accidentally sent this to Keedot :C ANYWAY

raises hand Ah...Stoker. Let me ask something. Let's say someone spiked our drinks with "making clothes dissappear" potions. Would you complain, cause...I sure would >///< You know me, Mr. Stoker! A Noobat is always embarrassed by such a thing! D: But they may have also spiked your drink with "Making pants magically appear" elixer. So...uhm.... I wouldn't know who. DB hurries off

Also, are you on my new Skype? I keep feeling like you are. D: And I never see you online :C

Aww it's okay everybody does that accidentally every now and then! I think you already know what I'm going to say about all the rest of it, though. XD
