In the eastern most city in Maine (and the USA), they celebrate New Year's twice. Eastport drops a giant maple leaf at 11pm (midnight Atlantic Time across the bay in New Brunswick, Canada) and then a giant sardine at midnight eastern time. Why a sardine? Sardine canning was invented there, though there are no longer any sardine canneries in the city. Of course, it's kind of a joke to call them a city with a population of about 1300. In Maine, it's not size the counts. It's your form of local government and Eastport is organized around a city plan with councilors and a mayor. (shrug)
