Is it customary here on Weasyl, to reply to comments given on pictures and journals and whatnot? I usually only reply if asked a question, but don't want to be impolite.

I don't believe there's any sort of customs on here yet. Personally I don't expect it, but it's nice when it happens. I've had some awfully good conversations with people thanks to some out of the blue comment chains. :) Then again I'm biased, I go around commenting on journals and such all the time haha. Like now, for instance!

I've had some nice conversations too. It's what encourages me to kinda force myself to talk more. ^^ I'm glad there are no social expectations on Weasyl yet. Takes the pressure off. XD

    No comments or replies necessary.

You're gettin' a reply anyway! NYAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I think it's less a matter of site habits and more a matter of personal opinion. I find it polite to reply to messages no matter what, but can understand than popular artists with a lot of traffic on their page may not have the time to reply to every single comment on their pages.

I really don't get all that many comments, so if I forced myself I could probably reply to a good chunk of them. It's just that most of the time is spent sitting there, not knowing what to say. I could spend 10 minutes waffling over a one sentence comment because I MUST word it right, and a plain 'ol "thanks" isn't good enough. ^^

Yeah, I had to force myself to change my habits and allow myself to let "short comments" be acceptable answers. Better than nothing!

I know I used to try to reply to everything but I find I only respond to more... thought out comments I guess? Like when people say thats cool or thats really funny, I appreciate the time they took to comment but I found I was just typing a lot of thank you replies and it was a lot of effort to try and think of anything else to say.

Yeah, if I can't think of something substantial to say I tend to stay quiet to avoid sounding robotic. To many "Thank you"s in a row start to sound a bit disingenuous.

Personal preference entirely! I do it to get to know the people who like my work, help them feel appreciated etc. I've let it slide a bit lately though >8 Life just gets busy...

That it does! Half of my office is still in boxes because of all the time I have to put into cleaning right now. Oi.

It's not expected, but certainly welcome. Of course, that won't stop certain people from feeling you owe them a response.

That's what worried me. I wanted to make sure it wasn't a sitewide feeling. :)
