Life changes and artblock advice. by zuckerdachs

So, as I mentioned earlier, sorry for the fave/comment bombing I just did. I went through well over a thousand submissions from the last few days alone. You guys are ridonk, man.

I'm going from way too busy to ... not, suddenly. I had a wonderful job at an unbelievably cool and respected photojournalism company, but thanks to the new CEO reorganizing my department, my contract was suddenly terminated. I'm very sad about this, but at least I have some great references and my resume has a rather startling company name at the top for the time being.

But hey ... now I will have more time to try to kick this artblock that's been hounding me.

What do you do to break artblocks?

Life changes and artblock advice.

That's awful news! I'm sorry to hear that.

When I need to get the ball rolling during an art block, I try to find a new art theory technique or tutorial to execute. It helps me get back to drawing when I feel stagnant.

That is definitely a great idea. I have that book you recommended on its way, so I can experiment with that!

When I have artblock I know I often put on music as I draw.
And... stupid to say but for some reasons watching other people drawing on livestreams also help. As if a reminder that I can draw too.

Also, sorry for the job.... I hear you there :(
I was working as an industrial drafter myself but.... in our cases contracts ran out so there wasn't enough work to do for the number of drafters we were.

Contract work has its up sides and its downs. I do like that it's always changing - I often get bored after a few months - but there is also the perpetual risk that a contract might be abbreviated or not renewed, and the stress between contracts.

What kind of music do you listen to while breaking an art block? I definitely have playlists for certain characters.

Ahhh, I'm really sorry to hear about that. D: It seems to be happening to a lot to people lately.

For art blocks, sometimes I find that looking at other artists helps a lot. Do you happen to know how your art blocks are created? It may help you figure out a way to circumvent them. I find with mine, they stem from procrastination on my half because I feel intimidated by the project, or the prospect of having to actually show it to other people. I tend to fix them by doing simple basic "warm up" sketches, and studies, with out the intention to finish them. I find that usually after about 15 minutes I feel less intimidated by it.

Maybe if you feel you're out of ideas or something, a random word generator, asking some friends for random suggestions, or possibly participating in something like Illustration Friday (http://illustrationfriday.com/) could help!

My artblocks actually arise for very similar reasons. I am at a stage where I really hate looking at my own art because I feel like I could (and should) be doing so much better than I am, so I often put off drawing because I'm disgusted with myself, and then that turns into a genuine anxiety about even picking up the stylus.

And wow, that link is magical! Thank you so much, I am bookmarking the hell out of it.

I just draw anyways. Not everything comes out right, so why worry about it not coming out right during art block? In essence there is no such thing. You either draw or you don't.

For me it's intimidation of myself and disgust with my art (gotta love those rushes of self-loathing!). I get so disillusioned that it's like having to learn to draw all over again. Though, on the other hand, huge and stubborn blocks like the one I've got now usually turn into bursts of rapid improvement (as if to spite myself). It's the getting there that is hard. :X
