Something I posted on Tumblr, but I feel it might as well go here as well. by Gerrark

With all this talk of “I hope this is the tipping point that finally kills FA” and “I hope I can finally do art somewhere else,” I feel there’s a few things to remember:

  1. Do not let fans dictate what you can and can’t do. Very easy to say, and less easy to practice I know, especially if you do rely on furries and the like for income. Nevertheless remember, they were there for -you- in the first place, to enjoy what -you- have to offer, to consume the fruits of -your- expression. In the end they’ll go where you, the creators, go. And if they don’t, well, I hope that they enjoy not seeing your stuff anymore out of pointless stubbornness.

  2. Even if a significant chunk of fans are lost from a migration, there’s always more to be had. When was the last time you thought to yourself “Wow, it’s been so long since I’ve seen new faces in this fandom” or anything of the sort? Because that’s frankly not something I’ve ever found myself saying. Yeah it can be scary to lose a few fans, especially if you needed their support—But there is more, and will always be more.

  3. Finally, even if this doesn’t “kill FA,” who cares? Like, seriously, why would we care what goes on in that website? There’s thousands, if not millions of furries and people who love what furries do out there. To think that the community is so small and so stubborn that it couldn’t support several different communities and art sites is not only myopic, it’s pretty clearly not true. After all, a lot of you who’re going to be reading these words will probably be furries, and I don’t see “furaffinity.net” in the address bar at the top, do you? Heck, I’ve met plenty of furries I never even knew existed through this website, and I’m sure you have too.

So move your stuff over to new websites, try out new avenues, and be in places where YOU are comfortable. Don’t settle just because other people are doing so.

this is great. i'll admit straight up, i'm not secure or confident enough to completely leave fa, so instead i'm just posting cropped stuff and linking to full versions here and elsewhere.

Hey man, nothing wrong with that. Especially considering that you rely on furries pretty heavily (If not entirely?) for income. I'll be the first to talk about how FA is a shithole and how we'd be better off if we all left it, but the last to start chastising people for not torpedoing their own income. Do what you need to do. I know where you stand, and I'm pretty proud of ya for taking the leaps you have in the first place.

Yeah I mean, I'd want to leave it comepletely, but it's basically the majority of my income, and with all the traffic it gets I literally cant afford to

    soooooooooooooooooooooo SHRUG

I'd love it if people would stop using it, that would be awesome, but the reality is that yeah it's not really going to happen for the foreseeable future, and it's not actually impacting me negatively to use it. Sssssssoooo oh well, big deal, I'll just throw my eggs in more baskets is all

As mentioned above, as much as it stinks for that to be the situation you're in, I don't blame you in the least for still being active on there. I won't be personally, but it's easier for me to say that, of course. All we can do is continue to give this site our support and hope that things do move away, even if slowly, I suppose.

I did notice and say point one elsewhere in different words, that people go to where the content is. In regards to the furry fandom, it's basically a historical truth. Going back a decade: Deviant Art Banned or discouraged Furry Art, which lead to SheazyArt, not wanting to get nicknamed SleazyArt they banned adult art, which lead to Furnation and Furaffinity (back when it was run by Atheus(sp?)) when FA banned Cub Porn, people took off to InkBunny.

Now, what's funny about this recent debacle, is that FA didn't ban anything, it's just they censored a number of comments pointing out that their staff is morally dubious and really controversial, and not the best people for the job in the skills department either. I really hate to use health-based analogies, but looking at the graphs of user statistics for other websites whenever something has kicked off on FA the past few months; you're getting this picture that it's getting an electronic Heart Attack. I'm pretty sure it's losing traffic, and people are being too optimistic saying "They'll come back, five minutes after the 'Leav1ng For3vah Journalz!' " as I'm still waiting for a few people from coming back after the initial event in 2011. I know Mottenfest (sp? really bad with usernames lately) hasn't been back.
