Is Weasyl Dead? (Updated) by RestrainedRaptor

Update November 2023: I got a reply back from the support email account. They say that the site is still actively moderated, but their inbox queue is very long and they apologize for the wait. So, at least there's still some hope. I just wish they can find a way to gain more traction again.

I've been porting over my watch list from FA for reasons already explained. Sadly it looks like most of them, if they haven't outright deleted their accounts, have their galleries left stagnant since 2015. I guess that's when the honeymoon period ended.

I also sent a support email in December, and another in February, and never received a reply to either of them. I guess nobody goes through the inbox any more... The lights are on, but nobody's home. Who's paying for the hosting fees, and when might they finally give up?

Weasyl was founded on the basis of doing things right - things that FA refused to, such as oversight for staff actions. It's a shame to see the project appears to have ended in failure. The same goes for so many other sites over the years.

How can we rescue people from the grasp of Dragoneer's claws when we can't gain critical mass? This is starting to feel like Elon Musk's Twitter, only it's been going on for 2 decades.

nope! people still post here multiple times a day so still alive and active :3 plus just recently, the inbox has moved and tags on posts already there have changed, seems the site itself had a little update so yeh UwU

I've found more dead accounts than active ones. The ones that are active are mostly using PostyBirb to cross-post, so that doesn't really mean a lot.

It's a much quieter website. I only check it from time-to-time and spend most of my time on telegram (and at work)

    I totally feel you.
Personally, I find that Weasyl is still one of the best, if not the best website, in term of interface, for drawings, and particularly furry drawings. So I insist and always make sure to post all my work here and to stay active. Unfortunately, I see a lot of inactive people here.
Some artists I follow are resisting though, as I do, and still are posting here. But because of its mostly inactive state, I have to admit Weasyl is the website I check on the least my messages, comments and journals.

In case you need to try another website, btw, I'd recommend you itaku. It looks really promising and I discovered quite a lot of furry artists are signing in there and uploading their work. I made one myself and I kinda love the website. It's a bit like Twitter, but better for uploading art.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep an eye on that one. Any opinions on SoFurry, InkBunny or InkBlot?

SoFurry seems barely more active than Weasyl... and the interface is outdated in my opinion.

Inkbunny is full of cub porn, so a lot of artists and users who don't like that seem to refuse to be active on it (but I may be wrong). Although, it is very active and the interface is as good as Weasyl, I'd say.

Inkblot is exactly like Itaku. It seemed more popular at first, but most of the NSFW artists I follow seem more interested in itaku than in inkblot. On another hand, inkblot seems to interest most of the SFW-only artists since the artists I follow on Deviantart talked more about this website... Despite both website allowing NSFW content I think (for itaku, it allows it for sure).

Now that we're talking about FA alternatives, I also remember there was Furry-Network.
I tried it years ago. I wasn't a fan, but MAYBE it's still an active website...? When I left it, some artists were still posting regularly on it.

It was supposed to be like a mix between Twitter (before Elon Musk bought it) and FurAffinity, I think.

My experience is that Weasyl is the least active of the there big non-FA furry websites. I get about five times more views on Sofurry than on Weasyl and more views on inkbunny than on sofurry with the same pictures. that said all have their pros and cons and your mileage may vary.

Itaku is decent but is new so can't really tell what niches it will appeal to/attract unlike the other three.

This place is a ghost town. I created an account here after FA's policy change and I've been here for two months. I might end up deleting my account in the next few days. This site is dead. Nobody is looking at my art. I get zero comments. It just feels pointless to remain on a platform that's seemingly been abandoned.

I posted a journal going over how dead this place feels.

The ghost town part certainly seems true and is disappointing, but I'm even more concerned about the lack of staffing.

I found something and it ain't good.

The last update they gave was on April 2nd, 2020 and nothing since then. Someone made a thread, but got no response back. I think it's safe to say the site is pretty much abandoned. I'm surprised the site is still around.

I feel this shows why it's impossible to make a competitor to FA because despite all the problems that plague FA and it's out of touch staff, that's still the premiere place for furs to go. Pretty much everywhere else is either a ghost town, or the sites have their own set of problems that make them just as bad as FA. People cry exodus and leave FA, only to come back when these other places don't have the user base FA does and these alternatives can never seem to grow.

Sorry. Deleted the comment to fix an error. XD
