Closed commissions by Kludge

I had planned to keep commissions open with no specified limits, but with more thought, that is probably not the best idea.

It seems a lot easier for me to have a set time to open my commissions form, another dedicated to commission discussions (perhaps near to when the form closes), and then the rest of the month to get the commissions done. Until this year, it feels like I've never really had a queue of more than two people at once. Or at least not in a long time. I have since learned that I feel more comfortable focusing all on everyone's preliminary sketches in one week, coloring them all in the next, etc. Rather than doing them individually from start to finish. The latter probably works for some, but I think I can do better otherwise. A one-person assembly line of some sort.

Anyway. For now, I have closed commissions while I finish the ones I have. I definitely still need the money, so I'll be reopening again when I get everything done. Perhaps I can stick to a schedule of openings, such as the last week of a month, or the beginning of a month. Not sure. But I'll figure it out someday. Thanks for all the support thus far

I do wish I had PayPal......I don’t even do banking online. I can only do stuff old school (checks in the mail! XD). Because if I did, I’d totally commission the heck from ya. (And I’d be dangerous to have online funds because of that! XD) But I wish you luck on your commissions now and in the future.

I understand what you mean by “assembly line” focus on art, because that’s what I do with my own stuff. I wait until I get a dozen drawings sketched out or basic lines, then I’ll ink them all. Then color them all. (Or do details if straight B&W.) I almost never do one piece start to finish at one time. To someone like me, who likes inking/linework the best, I like to have a lot to ink all at one time. :)

I definitely appreciate the thoughts, though. Wow, I feel like I've only written one real check my entire life, probably when I was 17 when I was figuring out how to use a bank...

A long while back, I actually thought an assembly line focus of art was bizarre. I couldn't fathom starting on a piece, putting it down, then starting another one. I think once I started to divide up commissions into stages that started with the sketch and then waited for the commissioner's approval, the process made more sense.

I’m old (I’ll be 47 next month) and an oldtimer. The internet scares me so I use it very little—you can count my bookmarked sites on one hand! XD I only have one friend I can commission by mail, but I accept my limits! :)

To me I feel like it makes sense, too. You get into the mindset of “this is inking” or “this is coloring” and you get into that groove that it feels so much easier to do a bunch in that stage all at once. :)

Ah, understandable. I guess I just worry about things getting lost/stolen in the mail, people's personal info, etc. With close friends I can understand though, and I'm glad that works out for you~

Very much so. I think the separation also sort of forces you to take breaks, I guess. Which is good when you lose track of time while at it.

Yeah, I’ve learned for some things (mailing), it’s better to splurge for a Priority Mail delivery—especially when you are concerned at what you’re sending. nods

Yeah......I find when I try to do everything in a single piece in one go, I get tired of what I’m doing pretty fast. I start crying that I need assistants like professional manga/comic book artists! XD Focusing bit-by-bit works a lot better for me and for artists like you and me, I think. :)
