This site's got a case of the spams. by Mithmeoi

This site has a serious problem with spammers lately. I keep seeing official art from video games and other random drawings being posted here with just links in the descriptions to "watch the joker free" and other garbage like that. I've reported several but is anything being done to curb this?

people have been contacting the owner. but nothing has been done due to the lack of admins. like there are 0.. ZILCH admins rn

    • Link

or maybe the staff page needs to be updated. but needless to say YES something is being done about it

      • Link

Well that's good to know at least. I was starting to think this site was being abandoned. :x But yea they definitely need to update who is on staff now.

  • Link

Literally the only way people have been able to contact the site staff is through https://gitter.im/Weasyl/weasyl
imo, it's extremely unprofessional to have to use a third party website to reach site staff about a problem, and it needs to change.

    • Link

Wow that's kinda lame... I hope they work out a better system. I started to think this site was being abandoned.

      • Link

With how the place is handled it might as well be... Which is a damn shame because it's a really well laid out website, and doesn't seem to have power hungry, manipulative, morally corrupt people in charge of it. CoughFuraffinityCough

        • Link

Yea... it's one of the reasons I stuck around. It's sad to see how dead it's become lately though. :<
and heh yeah... I hated FA, completely deleted myself off that site and several others.

    Maybe it's a joke.

    runs before he is spam-punned

If I had to guess, it's likely a lot of the sites have this problem, but the smaller post frequency makes it more prominent. Still a problem nonetheless.
I've been considering making a list of every bot I find. Once something done for reporting them, I'll be able to report a chunk of them fairly quickly with that.
It's really frustrating since this one of the few art sites that I like. I've heard nightmares about FA and I jumped ship with DA years ago.

    • Link

I report them as I see them. It probably is that, it's just really annoying. I go oh hey look some really good art... oh nvm it's stolen.
Wish it was a little more active here but such is life! Seems a lot of art sites are suffering in that regard lately.

FA is a trash heap. XD I won't ever go back. lol
I've been poking around a little more on DA again just for grins and giggles but I'm not actively trying to grow my following there either. Some of the artists I knew way back are posting again so I thought why not? since I deleted my FA.

      • Link

Same on the reporting end. Might just be me being a weirdo but keeping track of them might help if they keep posting before being taken down. Doesn't help that journal ones don't really show up on the front page.

You with FA is me with DA. I left once they changed the rules to where digital art is less protected (Around when you had to effectively file a DMCA takedown to stop someone from posting someone else's work) Since I mainly do digital that's a wee bit of a problem. Completely understandable on why it's still being used since it's one of the larger art sites.

Prior to me stepping down due to time commitment issues, the technical staff and director are actively working on a spam catcher to prevent bots from posting spam, the initial type being the journal spam. But somehow the spam bots got smarter and started to post the type of spam you mentioned. I believe that they are still trying to work on catching that new kind of spammer based on the Gitter conversations. I do hope that the current staff are able to assign someone to clear the backlog first.

    • Link

That's good to know! I hope they have luck in doing so.

I enjoy this site and I'd hate to see it overrun with spam bots or just people leaving because of stuff like that.

  • Link

Jeez! I don't spend as much time here so I never really noticed but that really sucks! I hope something DOES get done about it! Unless they want to start loosing members.

  • Link

... I've been wondering if this site is dying too. That, coupled with many artists only posting "sneak peaks" and requesting you pay them on Patreon for full versions, I'm not sure how art sites will be surviving in the long run. Which is sad. I miss the early days, things like Sheezyart.
If anyone knows of any other good art sites, I'm all ears to switch. But I won't go back to FA, not after what I learned

    • Link

Oh lawd, what did you learn about FA? Was it something more than what happened a couple years ago?
I deleted my account entirely cause I just couldn't stand it anymore so no going back there for sure. I'm just curious now.. LOL

But yeah I know a lot of the really popular artists do the preview only thing. Kinda lame. I get promoting patreon or whatever you're selling, but I feel like there's better ways.
I've noticed YCH and adopts absolutely flooding sites too nowadays. They need a market page just about on all of these sites so people that want to see that can go through those posts and people who just want to enjoy the art can go through regular art posts. That'd be really nice...

      • Link

Oh, it's probably the same thing as a couple years back. How one of the mods was reportedly a rapist... but that's only part of what threw me off. I had posted a journal saying that I didn't know what the truth was, but that I felt uncomfortable being on the site while that got sorted out, as it reminded me too much of my own past. I ended up getting death threats and rape threats and told I was better off leaving the site before someone forcibly came down my "gaping throat hole" or something like that. So... you know... I cannot support the fandom that likes to live there. Apparently, many of them are huge, HUGE creeps and assholes. My memories of FA are nearly all bad. I'd also get unsolicited requests from people to draw their characters in grotesque situations, with my sona doing unspeakable things to them, simply on the basis of her being a demon, despite me having "I WILL NOT DRAW GORE PLEASE DO NOT ASK THIS OF ME" on the front of my page

Yeah. I see a lot of that on here too. And with Patreon, my issue is that I follow so many artists that even if I gave a dollar a month, I'd be broke. And with YCH being posted constantly, my updates get cluttered with things so much I occasionally miss good art. But man, what I miss most is the conversations people used to have on sites like these. Or the fun we'd have drawing each other's characters. Honestly, I was surprised to see you comment back, which is crazy because I used to refresh my page every 10 minutes and have more things to respond to. I don't know if that's a symptom of the larger internet nowadays though. Because every site seems dead and silent to me. Even social media platforms are often just "likes" and things without real discussions and commentary. -shrug- Maybe I'm just an old dog already lol

I don't think Weasyl will outright die just yet, but it's true that I've also noticed it's nearly impossible to get interaction here these so I've been tempted to completely stop posting for that reason - IMO there are largely two reasons for this:

      • FA isn't dead by far and it's still by far the largest furry art site, regardless of one's opinion on it, and as long as FA will continue to exist the way it does sheer inertia and convenience will prevent other major furry art sites from flourishing.
      • Artists leaving furry art sites for social media sites in search for more and more immediate interaction with their watchers, so for example those leaving FA won't necessarily even consider Weasyl because "it's the same". Patreon (or the seemingly popular Patreon and private Discord server combo) kind of falls into this category as well.

But yeah, from the viewpoint of someone who enjoys watching art, the fade of actual gallery sites and general fragmentation is sad because it makes it progressively harder and harder to find new art to watch and to keep tabs on artists. :-/

      • Link

Yes, I agree with you whole heartedly. As I tell my artist friends, even if I gave you all a dollar a month, I follow SO MANY artists that I would, in fact, go broke quite quickly. And I'm afraid that even FA is becoming a lot of "Go support me on Patreon instead!" so even if I for some reason wanted to go back, there still wouldn't be too much to watch I fear

        • Link

          Unfortunately, yeah, also in the EU where I live Patreon is legally obligated to charge VAT which means I pay $1.24 for every $1 which goes to the artists (and Patreon itself), which makes things even more difficult. ^^;

Ugh, that sounds like a pain :/
