    Hello there!

Just recently got back into using this site a couple weeks ago myself (after like 5 years, oops!), been catching up my gallery here slowly but surely.
Also I've been trying to find active artists to watch, this site's a bit slow but I feel like it's a bit more laid-back compared to DA.

I'm glad I saw this journal--you've got some cute art and I'm going to add you to my watch list. The good kind, not the FBI kind.

How have you been, random artist of Weasyl I just discovered while looking at the newest journals?

    • Link

Haha, I've noticed how much more laid back this site is. Its kinda nice. Thank you for the watch. I've been well myself, trying to get back into the flow of things again after taking a long hiatus. You've been finding new artists on here? Any ones of interest?

      • Link

I'd like the site to be a tad more active, but I feel like if it got too busy it would just have the same issues as DA. I can't really comment on FA because I don't use it, but it seems like a lot of the accounts on here I find, are here because of the drama with that site.

Unfortunately, I haven't really found many artists to watch yet, as many accounts I stumble upon with art that I really like have been abandoned for years, while a lot of the artists currently active just aren't doing things that suit my personal tastes. I'm keeping an eye out, though! I'll keep poking around. One thing that's interesting is, I see a lot of art from users that don't seem to be on DA, so there's actually a lot here that I wouldn't otherwise see or wouldn't otherwise find with just how busy that site can be.

I've found a few of my friends from DA on here, though, and convinced a couple to join recently as well. I'm not really sure what your tastes are so I'm not sure who to recommend, so I'll just link a few recent discoveries...
https://www.weasyl.com/~catboots Really liking the softness of the art and colors combined with the cartoon style!
https://www.weasyl.com/~faithandfreedom Someone I watch on DA, who actually seems to be pretty popular here as well. Very professional, more "cartoon" style.
https://www.weasyl.com/~jaffa Animal photography! I love looking at actual photos of animals, especially when I'm in a bad mood. I'd love to find more photographers on here, that might be my next quest...
https://www.weasyl.com/~felisrandomis Seems to be another one of the more popular artists on here, but I like their stuff.
https://www.weasyl.com/~eddywhite Shouting out one of the DA friends, he does really good paintings that look like they belong on horror movie posters or something.

I'm seriously thinking I should just post a journal asking for suggestions, might be a nice way to get some recommendations and give some folks a chance to shout out their friends while maybe doing the same for some of my peeps. Anybody you'd suggest?

The main issue with DA and FA is getting lost in the sea of people. I agree with you on that. While FurAffinity can have drama I think most popular art sites will have that kind of thing. DeviantArt isn't immune to that either from what I've seen haha! My tastes vary but i generally don't judge, the only ones i struggle with are hardcore fetish posts.. or artists who ONLY post one fetish and nothing else. (Sometimes its easier to get past that with some vs others.)

I do like like the ones you recommended, though funny enough I already knew about Felisrandomis. I follow a few still active artists here, but one of the more cartoony artists i know is: https://www.weasyl.com/~buckdasystem
Its his commission page, though several years ago he had a main page with additional art on FA before the site was bought by IMVU. I'm not sure where he uploads more personal pieces anymore.

As for the others, if you like dragons there is: https://www.weasyl.com/~rackie
          and https://www.weasyl.com/~fortuna

I suppose i am a large fan of fantasy themed art xD
For the more realistic and more.. i guess i would call hard core themed works one of my favorite artists is: https://www.weasyl.com/~themefinland

A few of my recommendations on those who i know are still actively posting.

Oh, I did end up posting a journal and I've gotten a couple comments so far... [Link]

Might be worth keeping tabs on. I'm legit hoping to get more than two or three people in the comments, get more eyes on more profiles and see what happens. I get the feeling this sort of "community-minded" posting is something this site could use, but at the same time, might be a bit too shy to really interact with. Maybe you should come post your recommendations there too!

And, of course, first comment is Uluri. 11/10 community spirit. (Would recommend checking them out too.)

FelisRandomis seems to be one of the more popular artists on here, and was suggested by Uluri too. Your suggestions were pretty solid too! Not necessarily things I may have found while browsing, so it's good to have had someone point them out to me.

All I really know about FA drama is what an outsider hears from people they know who use both FA and DA. It seems like the biggest issues were/was the site being buggy and unstable (I knew FA was down EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. because I'd see several journals in my inbox on DA about it), security issues and privacy breaches, the staff, and then the IMVU buyout. DA's drama seems to be far more interpersonal, and far more immature, and I steer clear of it as best I can. It's just gonna be that way with any large site I guess. I do like how chill this place is and how I can just talk to people and get responses even though it might be my first interaction with them.

DA also has that drama with Eclipse going on, and it's sorta coincidental that I remembered I have a Weasyl account like, two days before the most recent official update. I got super worked up and frustrated like many others, decided to archive art here in case things reached critical mass and the account was already here so why not, but after spending a couple weeks here I'm way more chill about DA and its future... and I have a secondary presence online just in case.

OMG thank you! I thought I was the only person who didn't care for artists who limit themselves to drawing one specific fetish and nothing else! Especially when their style is otherwise cute, but they're fixated on one fetish and it's one that squicks me out. It just seems like a great way to stagnate and limit yourself tbh. Seems like that happens often to commission artists, and probably not necessarily by choice.

            • Link

I never pay attention to DA when they make updates. Despite the "age" of my current account I've been on DA for like.. over 10 years. I removed my first because one update nuked the "newest uploads" section. I returned when that came back. (Kinda, I'm still super slow and rarely post anything there, only changing it recently.) DA always had issues, but at this point, i think most art sites do. Its hard to follow artistic website trends.

Tumblr was a thing for a while.... heh.

DeviantArts maturity level has always been... well... Lack of a better term... Low. But it naturally draws younger audiences due to how well known it is. It was my first art site, just like many other new budding artists. I moved to FA due to a recommendation. I wont say I'm well known or popular by any means. But i also haven't tried super hard to be such.

Nah, it kinda saddens me when an artist ONLY focuses on one fetish. Even if i might like the theme, its always nice to see someone explore and branch out. Draw something they normally wouldn't, or even see personal art and not just the commissions of others. I can understand though for some of them. The commissions is how they fend for themselves, make a living. Its hard to draw things for themselves in that case.

              • Link

I often compare DA to YouTube, in that it's a large site full of user-generated content to the point where any sort of real-time manual moderation is nearly impossible, and it's got a monopoly so there's no competition forcing them to change to better serve their users or nowhere else for people to really go for the same sort of service should they decide to do things the community is unhappy with. While it would take a lot for me to outright remove my account, I have given thought to just abandoning it in the past, and for a while at the end of last year I practically did, just letting scheduled submissions run. But I was dealing with other issues too...

Tumblr just wasn't for me, honestly. I didn't like the layout or the interface so I never bothered to use it. I guess "blogging" just isn't my style.

People have recommended FA in the past, but it just never seemed like a good fit either. Aside from the issues I mentioned before, I'm just not a "furry" like that. I'd just feel kinda out-of-place there and it's their space so it's kinda selfish to go in there and expect everyone there to know that I don't want to roleplay, I don't do requests, I don't want to talk openly about your kinks or how turned on one of my cartoon animals makes you, and I have no idea whatsoever what's happening in your fandom. While talking to some other people recently has definitely improved my perception of the site to the point where I now consider using it a possibility, I'm just not sure I want or need to juggle 3 sites, even with the aid of a cross-posting tool like Postybirb (which my computer does NOT like for some reason, all sorts of security warnings from my browser, my antivirus, and then Windows itself woke up and blocked it, even though I know it's a legit thing seeing that many warnings made me decide not to mess with it right now since it's not actually necessary).
Also, earlier on, most of the ones that suggested FA were pretty much doing so in a thinly-veiled attempt to get me to draw more/more explicit fetish art. "There's less trolls there so you can post your [X] art with less worries!" etc. and the X was always referring to whatever fetish it was that happened to dominate their favorites. Kinda makes you leery after a while.

If DA really goes any further downhill and this Eclipse thing is the nightmare so many expect it will be, I might wind up on FA. At least, in deciding what's worth cross-posting to Weasyl from my DA gallery, that'll save me time in deciding what might be worth archiving and what isn't, and I should be able to copy and paste the descriptions with ease as well. I've been told so long as I make it clear on my profile what my limits are, that'll go a long way towards alleviating most of my concerns.

I misworded that last point, sorry... I don't necessarily have anything against the artists themselves, but I really don't like it when they restrict themselves to one specific theme. I notice it mostly with fetish art, though. Commissions, being work, well... we all gotta work to pay bills. I did commission work for a bit when I was between jobs, hated it because I had a very limited client base, with the majority of them coming from one guy who was difficult to work with at times and had very repetitive ideas.

Maybe I need to cross-post some of my one-off stuff, every so often I take a break from drawing cartoon animals and draw a vehicle or a building or an object and people seem to respond positively (on DA). They're never super impressive or anything, but people still seem to like seeing the sorts of buildings these characters live in or the vehicles they drive.

Sorry for being so wordy and rambly. It's just a thing I do it seems.

                • Link

Oh i have no issues with these responses, its nice to be able to talk so openly about these things. I understand the concerns regarding FA too. I've been on there for a while now and when i was much more active it was difficult to get your name around. Especially if you don't draw NSFW.

It can be difficult to keep yourself updated on all the different websites if you have multiple. I have DA, here, FA, Twitter and i used to have Tumblr. For sometime i got well known on Tumblr, but that was when i was following a fandom. When i stopped participating in that, people lost interest, and then the admins decided to explode their own website. So.. Whatever on that haha! I did make a few friends there though and even got to meet a few of them in person which was cool.

I generally post everything on each site, but in a random order.. Some sites might get to see an image earlier than others. Of course there are also some things i post exclusively on one sites.. Like some furry things i wont post on DA because it wouldnt get any attention. But at the same time human based art usually isnt shared on FA for the same reason. (Though sometimes i just choose not to upload at all because I'm lazy haha.)

To draw various things is good practice and stress relieving, but at the same time its hard to figure out where to post specialized images or general sketches. One has to ask themselves, is this practice worth sharing or nah... I usually chose nah..

                  • Link

First off, thanks for watching back! Seems like people here, just like on DA, find those sort of "thanks" messages on their profiles annoying and don't reply... but I really do appreciate it! I'm currently upload-bombing the site so be prepared for, like, a LOT of stuff from me the next few weeks.

Also, thanks for putting up with me all this time.

I'm glad people take the time to acknowledge my concerns and answer honestly when I talk about FA, admittedly I still don't feel like it would be the best fit for me. I draw SFW cartoon animal stuff. I do draw lots of things that scratch the surface of fetish art--I love drawing chubby/pudgy characters, characters in their underwear (and it's always colorful and/or has silly patterns), characters in embarrassing situations, babies (sort of hesitant to describe the art as "babyfur" but I guess it is technically babyfur), I sometimes drew older characters in diapers too because it was silly/embarrassing (I guess it counted as "diaperfur" but since I never drew diaper use, they didn't care, and I eventually lost interest in it because I found the diaperfur community either completely ignored me or completely alienated me), and the occasional bondage, hypnosis, wedgies, cross-dressing, just general cartoon silliness like you'd see on the cartoons that probably sparked these fetishes for many. But, since I don't take it that far (nothing I've drawn has ever required a mature rating), I don't feel like it would really work out on FA. Like I said about the diaper stuff, either totally ignored, or people pushing me to take it further than I'm comfortable with or interested in.

Fun fact: I actually met my roommate because of some art I was posting, he's a pretty cool guy and as it turns out, way more of a gamer than a furry so the more NSFW or fetish-oriented aspects rarely actually come up. He's been here since 2016, too, so it's definitely working out.

I know Tumblr had a reputation for NSFW and fan-art, neither of which were really my scene either, but I still think it sucks that they decided to abolish NSFW content. Especially when previously, it seemed so welcoming to that sort of thing, and those types of artists.
Sounds like I was also right to think that, if I wasn't part of the NSFW community or a fandom, the site wouldn't really do much for me... Oh well. It was their space. Just a shame that ad/app revenue outweighed the importance of the community using the site in the admins' minds.

I had a serious question about humans/humanoids and FA! My "fursona" is a kemonomimi/hybrid person and is basically a fat guy with a skunk tail, I was worried how that would go over there since I draw him on occasion. I have a few other characters like that too, I like the idea of anthro/human hybrid people sometimes. But it seems like furries generally dislike them because "too human", while everybody else thinks "eww, furry".
DA does seem to heavily, HEAVILY favor fan art and anime over anything else, though. But, the site's user base is big enough to still come up with an audience for just about anything.

I noticed that, moving forward in time through my gallery on DA, more and more of it seems to be "content for content's sake" since a site like DA highly rewards quantity over quality. So when "post this or nah" comes up, I'd often think "well I did spend a couple hours on it, so..." and toss it in the scheduled submit queue so my account would live another day. While my 2013-2014 cross-posting seemed to be every single piece, I feel like as I move forward, out of 300+ posts per year, I'll maybe have 150 I think are worth porting over and the rest will just be "yeah, this feels like activity feed filler..." and just sorta be passed over.
I just honestly have no idea what Weasyl likes, or if it would even be worth posting art of vehicles and scenery and stuff. I am considering just consolidating a bunch of pictures of vehicles into one post just to see how its received, though. They're mostly side views of cartoony cars and trucks, nothing too remarkable, but still stuff I'd probably like to have archived somewhere besides DA.

                      Sorry for the long delay.

I get that, its hard to figure out what people might be interested in seeing, but half of the time I try not to concern myself on those details too much and just draw what I am personally interested in. I'm also lazy and draw very little so i guess that isn't fair. xD

Deviant art has a very weird system..but yeah thats true its more quantity. You can have quality too, but you need to have it more fan based imagery if thats the case.. A lot of people only go for the fan art on DA, that and you have to hope and try to get attached to a large number of groups too if you really want people to see it. There is just too much out there.
