Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - movie review by JohnStripedfur

I just got a sneak peak of the movie itself today. It was free at a naval air station and was able to get in. It was pretty crowded, but did managed to get a seat.

Now, before I move with the review, here are my thoughts on the first one. The first one has been my #1 favorite Marvel movie for the past few years. I wasn't sure about the movie when I first saw the trailers since I never heard of the characters nor the actual comic books of the Guardians of the Galaxy. So, wasn't sure what to think of it. When I saw it, I was blown away on how much I really enjoyed it. It was almost like Star Wars, only a Marvel version of it. It was a space adventure movie everybody has been wanting for a long time. It was the movie that showed up at the right place at the right time. It filled that void we've been longing for almost over a decade. And when they are going to do a sequel of it. I was ultra excited about it. Can't wait to see what other adventures these misfits would run into.

And then I saw Vol. 2. And it did not disappoint me. I really enjoyed it. It's just a great as the first one. With many funny one liners, great character moments, and great writing as well. I think I should agree with one critic who compared the movies with the two other space franchises. The first one felt more of a Star Wars movie while the other feels more like a Star Trek movie. With going to new worlds and learning about them. And the villain in this movie. Wow. Truly terrifying. I won't spoil it on what happened and who is it, but I will tell you this. To the people who criticize the Marvel movies for having weak or bad villains. They should watch this movie because they would NOT be disappointed. I guarantee it. ;)

I have to nitpick though and it's a very small one. Sometimes I felt like they put in a little too much comedy in the sequel. Even though the first one does have comedy in it, this one felt they put in a lot more in it. Like, someone in the higher ups said, "People loved Guardians Vol. 1 so much because it's funny. So, if we put in more comedy in the sequel, they'll love it even more." Some of the jokes were pretty funny and well placed, but I felt like I was being feared that it might go the Ghostbusters remake rout. Where they'll put the jokes in even the most serious of scenes just to get a few laughs. Glad they didn't go that route for the most part.

Anyways, aside from the comedy angle. This movie was very much enjoyable. It's not better than the first one, but it's just as good. I'm willing to see it for a second time. Or even a third time. It's that much enjoyable. And stay during the end credits. There's five of them. You won't be disappointed in any of them. Promise. ;)

Got to see it last week - for some reason they released it early in Australia (25th April) instead of waiting until school holidays and wondering why people just pirate it (like the Lego Batman movie, which was withheld for 7 weeks...).

I did find some of the humour a bit forced and the 3D wasn't worthwhile (in this reporter's opinion anyway), but overall not bad.
