What have I been up to? Building a shed by Aldin

In my spare time over the past month or so, I've been building a replacement for the old rusted-out metal shed that came with The Squirrels Nest. Set of photos (reverse order) over on my Livejournal account.

Nice! I actually need to do the same thing. The old metal shed that came with my house just isn't big enough for a workshop.

    Thanks!

My biggest challenge was finding a set of plans. I found something close and altered it to suit what I needed and the space I had. I need to clean those plans up a bit 'cause my younger brother needs to replace his shed soon also.

I spent about $830 on supplies for this one. Of course, I saved a bit here and there. There's a shipping box manufacturer 20 miles (35km) north of me. I was able to buy pressure treated "scraps" 2ft x 4ft for the floor at $2 each. A sheet 4ft x 8ft of PT usually sells for about $35. So $8 vs. $35 per 4x8 area. I had a similar deal on the roof: OSB is about $20 to $25 per 4x8 sheet. That same company had scraps 4ft by just under 2ft for $1.50 each. I was very tempted to do the walls with scraps, but didn't want to deal with that much extra framing/caulking.

The windows were freebies found abandoned in a field. Most of the 2x4 studs were "seconds" and so on. The mustard yellow paint I used as primer was $9 at a surplus/salvage chain in our area (primer is about $25 per gallon around here). Top coat paint was freebie. Shingles were seconds from a building material salvage store--good enough for the shed and about $10 less per bundle than shingles elsewhere. Alas, right after I bought them (with a no return policy) I was offered 6 bundles free.

Commercially, a similar size shed locally would run $2.5K plus delivery. So, yeah, I'm quite happy with the results.

Ooh, that's looking nice! I hope to have half as much fun when I get my greenhouse, lol
