My problem with following people elsewhere (not really a rant, maybe) by FeyPhoenix

As much as I hate to admit it, FA has had a good bit of my focus lately. Mostly because of the people that are no longer active here. Now... A good bit of them are supposedly active on places like tumblr and Twitter, but... I don't like using them to follow artists.

Tumblr and Twitter don't have notifications for when artists post stuff. This is a huge, major reason I can't use them. I am pretty busy at home and work, most of the time, so I can't really constantly scroll through or monitor them in order to not miss anything, and there are far too many artists I follow for me to check every single one. There are a few I do that for, mostly here in case I missed something they posted, but that's not really an option for everyone.

How do you feel about tumblr/Twitter/other social media sites like them that people post to? Am I the only one that feels this way? I'm certain I can't be the only one. :x

Especially tumblr in this case, simply because that seems to be the most popular choice of people that are no longer using weasyl /or/ FA

Yes, you are right.... I am having a bad time to keep up things...

I just don't bother with social media in general. Tumblr's layout in general makes little sense to me, Twitter is... twitter.

    • Link

Yeah, tumblr especially seems built for... People who don't give a shit? Like, you have to dig through 14 million reposts to fix the origin of something and there is virtually 0 user interaction.

  • Link

I stopped using both twitter and tumblr to post comic pages because of that fact. I kind of widh there was aldo a better way to organize all my stuff on them. :/

    • Link

Yeah, the interaction, or lack of, on tumblr specifically is rather lame

I use twitter more for advertising cause I get squat here. I actually despise the Tumblr art scene >.> more toxic than da

I've been updating here as I have things, still, cause it's the only site I have for that

    • Link

Nothing wrong with that. For advertising and such, Twitter is a great place I suppose.

I use Instagram more than anything.

I can just turn on the notification thing for the artists I follow, and get notifications for their stuff and my stuff.

Twitter's a big no for me too, though; I just.. ugh. It's all so dramatic, more that Instagram.

    • Link

I never got Instagram. Plus I hear it is rampant with art theft and fakes :x

  • Link

As much as i like some artists if they go dead and only post to twitter or tumblr and no offense to any of em I am just not bothered dealing with it for the same reasons. (bonus: I like to check twitter in public and a lot of em seem to forget you can mark pictures as nsfw so it's not exactly my cup of team emergency scrolling past dicks in public)

    • Link

Yeah. I actually will go follow them there, but it has been a long time since I have used either, so I may as well have just stopped following them.

Tumbler is a massive pain for interaction and the reblog thing makes it nigh impossible for me to tell who posted whatever I'm seeing. I can't get into it as an interactive site, but it's alright as a gallery.

    • Link

Ah, yes, I agree! I actually was just saying that above xD and I guess as an art gallery it is fine, but how does one with no followers even get found? I didn't really see a decent browse option either

      • Link

You have to tag the crap out of everything and reblog like crazy, is what it comes to. Sorta a pyramid scheme style method to.it.

        • Link

Eww, that makes it even worse :x

          • Link

On the flip side, it's occasionally nice for meeting other people with similar nonbinary gender stuff. I think more people follow me for the dress up pictures.

            • Link

Ahh, yeah. I suppose it could be used for some networking, but still... The options for interactions there are pretty minimal. I suppose you'd have to put other contact methods on the profile page or what not to get in touch with others...? (I keep meaning to check your dress up stuff out, but have been forgetting >.< )

Tumblr has a built in messenger similar to Facebook, which is where I had a couple nice chats. There's commenting on some posts, but it's spotty and I have no idea how to enable or disable it. (Lately I've been pretty happy in girl mode, so there's tons of pictures.)

                • Link

Ah, the chat must be new since I last sat down and struggled to try and enjoy my time there :B

                  • Link

That's probable. It's a weird site, frustrating to use but if you hit a good stream it's nice. Almost a microcosm of the web, mostly full of stuff without any personal value but find one good spot and you can get involved.

It would be nice if you could set notifications on social media sites like Twitter & Tumblr about specific users posting something new

    • Link

That would be nice. Or better intractability for tumblr especially. But still... Tumblr is a bit of a toxic environment, too, unfortunately.

      • Link

It can be depending on who you follow. I know that most of the community doesn't do their own research on issues and just follow the herd, so to say

Personally I find Tumblr to be one of my favourite websites <3
