A Question by Rob Swanson

So, here's a question that I'm hoping will prompt some discussion. How did you come up with your fursona? Did it evolve over time or did it just kind of come to you one day? I'm curious as to what your story is.

I suppose it's only fair to post up my own story to go with this.
Some years ago, there was a group of people I used to play paintball with. We've sense gone our separate ways, but back then we were pretty close friends. During this period, I had made the leap from using a mechanical marker to an electronic marker. (98 Customs still rock though) There was a company called Diablo that made a marker called a Mongoose. About 10 years ago I picked up a blue "LCD" version of the gun and fell in love with it. As an aside, the thing really hit above its weight. Then again, most companies that produced Spyder clones made their markers better than Spyder did, so they hit above their weight by default. Anyways, one day in particular a few friends and I were playing at a wooded field and one of them made a comment. They said something to the effect of, "It's fitting you own a Mongoose, because you fight like one." Back in high school, I was really thin. I mean, like 5 foot 10 inches and 130 pounds thin. (I blame great metabolism.) I was also really flexible. Because of these two factors, I could use cover more effectively than I should have been able to. If memory serves right, the game before my friend made that comment I used a six inch wide tree as cover. The other team couldn't hit me. Too fast, too thin, and too flexible they said.

Some years later when I came into the furry fandom, a Mongoose was a natural fit. It was one of the few animals that I actually had a meaningful connection with. Plus there weren't many people using them as a basis for a fursona. So, I could be unique without having to invent a species or mis species. I'm not the most artistic or creative person, mixing species probably wouldn't have worked out well for me anyways. So, that's my story, what's yours?

Eh, I'm aving trouble sleeping. So I'll give my story.

Truth be told, there is nothing to picking the species. I just went with fox and never questioned it. The story comes from the evolution of the character. Originally, Zaezar was a monocolor orange fox with my messy blonde hair. The black on the hands and feet ended at the ankle and wrist due to me wanting to draw the color break in the fur and REFUSING to learn to draw them without clothing on (more so the clothing was a crutch to bad anatomy than anything else). At the time, I had a comic planned. It didn't have a name quite yet, but it had a world, setting, theme, and a bunch of characters. One where my sona would play a role in. Only my personality didn't quite fit. No matter what part of me that I exaggerated it never quite worked out. Then I started to notice how plain and boring an all orange fox was. Since I already had some changes in mind, I decided to just make a new fox with the black making more sense, white on the belly to break up the color, made the hair closer to my darkening haircolor, and changed the orange to a proper red fox. The previous sona, I named Bell and gave him his own personality.

The only changes that Zae has had since then is the addition of glasses, sideburns, and darkening hair with each new ref.

I think mine is similar to Zaezar's...when referring to Wabi, who is the closest to me as a fursona and was created with the intention of being that. I love fantasy things and canines. It was no question in his development. I could have made his gender female like me IRL, but being tomboyish having him be male was a better suit to my personality.

But I use Keira-Jo online as my name and representation because she was really important to me. She was created to represent me in a Sonic fan-club. But when it disbanded, I used her in my fan-fiction...it was there that she developed her own personality. But she was the first character I created "for me" (and not for my writing)...so, no matter what she is incredibly important to me, even if Wabi is a better interpretation as me for a fursona. :)
