I posted my first video on youtube. It's the start of a new series of SNES soundtrack mix breakdowns, starting with one of my favorites, Super Metroid.
I really enjoyed making this, because I've always been interested in how video games HAD music and sound effects at all, and more recently I've been trying to imagine how those musician-programmers worked within the confines of those old machines. Listening through these songs channel-by-channel lets me infer more specific things about how they made choices and what their original vision for the music might have been. Interesting!
I probably won't post any more of these on Weasyl on account that it's not furry or anything. But hey, I figured you guys might like to know it exists.
The youtube post itself has useful annotations and timecode links in the description, you may want to go to YT directly to view it. :<
Edit: looks like the annotations are coming thru fine, yay!
does anyone even think to do "16-bit remix everything"? cause (acclaimed flonkus band) 16-bit remix turns up nothing.
Very cool, loved listening through this, I'll definitely be hearing all the levels next time I hear the tune :3
Okay, this is kindamaybe one of the coolest things I've stumbled across all day. owo ~
The layers that go into an iconic track like this... It's something I didn't realize I took for granted? If that makes sense? x3 *laugh* Love all the explanations you offered about what the sounds reminded you of and how they affect the tone of the final piece, such as the movement of sounds from left to right and why that mattered. Rewatching the first moment of the video after hearing all the channels picked apart ended up being really cool.

That is really intense. I've always enjoyed the Metroid games because of the sense of dread the music alone conveys, but hearing it broken down like this just really drives it all home. Thanks for sharing this!
