What the common folk in this real don't realize is that the Tree is sending the knights to their death. Probably a far worse fate as well.

I don't know about death necessarily but this certainly isn't a sinecure. Any one of them could die, perhaps especially since they are fighting against the thing that has basically conquered everything else so far.
