Figured I'd show a W.I.P version of this one. It's what I've been working on today and decided to forgo streaming till I get this done.

This piece is a couple of things for me. One it's an exercise in environment painting. I've also decided to make it even more challenging for myself and paint an environment full of crystal formations that'll be reflecting and refracting light, as well as being object that have opacity to take into account.

Now, I've obviously not started any of the reflective work yes. I've only sort of begun planning out where the light is hitting which surface. But I thought the progression from the sketch with the color and value planning, to the point I am now, is pretty cool.

As for the meaning / why I decided to paint this, well, because sometimes I just need to sit down and focus. Thus for a moment, not letting anything distract me. The cavern is an environment of calm and stability.

I'm looking forward to how this is going to turn out in the end. But first, I need to study how light reflects and refracts in/on crystal surfaces.

Now that has the potential to look really awesome, I think. I'm rather torn between making Fortress of Solitude jokes, or Star Wars! xD

I'm really pushing this one to look really good. I haven't painted very many crystals before so it's definitely testing out my understanding of how light works with them. But it's looking pretty cool. Sadly I'm only like, 1/3 of the way through the next stage of detailing. Oh man, this is gonna take a while. XD

With as much scattering and refraction as you get out of crystal like that, with all the possible light angles? You're a lot more daring than me, for sure! That's quite a project, with a LOT of potential!

Oh yea, so many different things to take into account. It's a challenge for sure. Just gotta take it one layer of detail at a time. Otherwise I'll freak myself out and never finish haha! XD
