DL: Dirge by VoidShark

DL: Dirge

VoidShark

Name: Dirge

Age: Teens; exact age unknown

Height: 6’0’’

Species: Helmethead

Subtype: Archnoble ; Registers as Hellhive

Personality

Stubborn, unpredictable, and unreliable. Dirge is friendly, oblivious, and not exactly the brightest most of the time. His personality is very split depending on the circumstances surrounding him. In familiar settings, Dirge is generally optimistic, careless, reckless, entirely undaunted by threats, fairly shallow with how much he bothers to think, argumentative, fairly self absorbed, curious, and independent. He is both scatterbrained and one track minded. Energetic, restless, impatient. A complete loose cannon. He does a few of the things right some of the time; but he also does most of the things wrong most of the time. A good part of this is simply to blame on him being young, and undirected in life. He also lacks the concept of personal space.

In unfamiliar settings, Dirge is anxious, shy, fearful, incredibly socially awkward, and often brutally honest. It doesn't take much to cause Dirge to completely lose any rational line of thought when he's anxious and outright panic. Despite what he presents himself as, Dirge is an incredibly high stress creature most of the time.

Bio

Dirge considers himself to be a bounty hunter, although that is only a very small portion of what he does. He’s more like an errand boy, but he denies this. He has become well versed in the art of skinning and processing hides of creatures into various useful products and wares. He has spent a significant duration of his time outside the protection of the city walls, collecting Tomb Tongue skins. He usually prefers to be either out of the city or off-planet as whenever he is in the city, he usually ends up in trouble.

As the story goes, Dirge was just a young Noble kitten when his life took a major, abrupt turn. His parents were peace ambassadors, seeking to establish relations with outside species; a fairly unpopular opinion on Deadlock. They and their Assembly--the ones who supported them anyway--weren’t far off planet when their ship was attacked and raided. The ship was taken and the crew killed, save for the leaders' young kitten, whom they petitioned the raiders to take back with them. They claimed that he was too young to have been warped with the same delusions and morals that they themselves held.

This is where Coffin Dust came into the picture. He was the leader of the raiders and eventually agreed, bringing the young kitten to his own clan back at the Outposts. While Dirge was used primarily to run meniel errands, they did eventually officially make him apart of their clan after awhile. He was left to fend for himself under most circumstances although the Brutes and Reavers did come to consider him as one of their own and protected him against other clans when they were around.

Coffin Dust’s grudge against Archnobles however, was turned against the spared Noble kitten. Being the spiteful creature that he was, he wanted to assure that the kitten would suffer a similar fate to that of himself. He spent an extensive amount of effort tampering with Dirge’s genetic coding and eventually was able to get the city to recognize Dirge as a Hellhive rather than a Noble.

Coffin Dust also deleted and otherwise corrupted Dirge’s memories of anything beyond his time with his clan, save for how it was that they initially. Despite having done this, Coffin Dust has always told Dirge that he killed his parents and that Dirge owes him for not doing the same to him. A lifelong debt.

Regardless to having been treated poorly by Coffin Dust and the others, Dirge considers Coffin Dust them to be his family. He tends to cling to whoever will tolerate him as he is rather lonely. He knows he’s unwanted, but he’ll take what he can get.

In addition to having corrupted memories, Dirge has had a decent amount of augmentations for his age. It is a cultural norm to acquire these, and by social standards, the modifications that he does possess are rather impressive, but none of them have really been his ideas.

Coffin Dust uses him a bit like a walking advertisement billboard for his work. He has always had a tendency to add new augmentations when Dirge has made him particularly mad, claiming them to be improvements, although everyone knows, Dirge included, that it’s just a fancy, socially acceptable cover for torture--Coffin Dust doesn’t bother to follow proper procedure of having the being undergoing modifications unconscious after all and on the contrary prides himself on making the process as uncomfortable as physically tolerable, a rather sadistic game no doubt.

The worst of these augmentations was Dirge's face plate. The plate itself is considered to be a very attractive, high end, complex augmentation piece, but there’s a reason for that. Other than the cost, due to the nature of how it is installed, it is an incredibly painful process and has a very long recovery and adjustment period. It nearly killed Dirge and he’s still adjusting to the changed field of vision and the vertigo effect it causes as a result.

This is a summary of a good portion of his life thusfar, however as of present, his circumstances and living arrangements have changed drastically.

Having gotten himself kicked out of Coffin Dust’s clan, Dirge followed the lead of his robot friend, Aegis, to try and find a new clan, since being without one is practically a death sentence for a Helmethead.

After quite a struggle he was eventually introduced to Kru’voxx; a colleague of Coffin Dust’s who is the leader of a Noble Assembly. Kru’voxx, being a Helmethead geneticist and high tier city network hacker, assisted Dirge in figuring out what he actually was and managed to rebuild and restore enough of Dirge's DNA data to reestablish him as a Noble. There are still corruptions, but Kru’voxx's own Clan/Assembly signal is enough to mask it from the city's detection.

As such, Dirge has found himself a new home/clan--Kru’voxx's. Unfortunately, he's still rather unhappy with his place in life. Having unintentionally chased off the people he considered friends, he seems to be in a constant battle to even understand himself and why he does what he does.

Dirge is used to being deserted whenever things become inconvenient, and over the years he's also learned no one truly wants to be around him--not long term. Unfortunately this causes him to constantly 'test' people by being awful to them to see if they too are going to desert him. In turn the people eventually become frustrated with why he has suddenly become, and remains, such an unlikable creature, and then drift apart. Thus the cycle repeats.

Dirge goes back and forth a lot on whether or not he wants friends or to be alone out of anger. Unfortunately, being a Helmethead only complicates the matter, as they have a species-wide genetic defect that causes their heads to heat up internally. In times of stress, it overheats, causing the Helmethead to go into a blind rage, which, in turn, inclines them to make some very poor choices.

-it is speculated that Dirge probably has some psychological (if not physical) damage. Quite honestly, he's a rather unbalanced individual that seems to be getting increasingly unbalanced and disturbed. Stress significantly worsens this.

-Corruptions from Coffin Dust tweaking his genetic coding has caused faulty and inconsistent neural firing at times. This issue is then heightened by being under emotional or physical stress and compounds with the already present species wide genetic weakness of overheating.

-Another contributing factor is that Dirge has become less oblivious to his life and has a bit of a post traumatic stress response to it. That, mixed with never having been taught how to deal with anything, has made him extremely volatile and unpredictable as of late. He hasn't the slightest clue what's wrong with himself and is generally miserable and keeps lashing out at everyone.

-The constant reinforcement of negatives has finally worked its way under his skin. While his big dumb and happy outlook still lurks somewhere beneath the surface, a significantly more somber, sad, and lonely outlook has taken root, driving him towards being rather nihilistic. His turbulent emotions only compound the problem.

Skills

Pelt/hide processing
Dirge is actually quite skilled at skinning and processing pelts/hides/skins. He even knows how to make things like bags, cases and small clothing articles out of them after.

Elite Arena Fighter
While Dirge is actually an Archnoble, he learned to brawl like a Reaver. He has numerous wins in the Arena and is considered an elite combatant.

Bounty Hunter
While it is his favorite thing to claim it's also the trade he has the least amount of time invested in. It is however still true. Dirge is a bounty hunter and is moderately skilled if he can stay focused and on task. More often than not he goofs off though and it ends up costing everyone, himself included, big.

Relations with Other Characters

Coffin Dust
Dirge's first boss and the clan he has been a part of most of his life. Despite Coffin Dust hating him, he had always assumed that Coffin Dust must like him to some degree.

Imperious Teregonius
Dirge’s loyal Legionnaire friend whom he never believes. He thinks he’s funny.

Triskele
Coffin Dust’s niece has had a crush on Dirge for years. Dirge doesn’t really like her and thinks she’s annoying, oh, and Coffin Dust would probably kill him anyway.

Revenant
A guard at the Arena whom Dirge has had a lot of dealings with over the years. He considers him a friend.

Kru’voxx
New clan leader--an Archnoble who has dealings with Coffin Dust occasionally.

Dyonin
Another bounty hunter; they had a rough start, but are allies. He is a Noble in Kru’voxx's clan. Kru’voxx set him in charge of keeping an eye on Dirge.

Galaxy Vision and Mirror Zone
Two Hellhives from a rival clan that Dirge crosses paths with a lot. They’re usually at each others’ throats although they see each other as rivals, rather than enemies. One wouldn't know it though. The two have tried to kill Dirge with very near success, numerous times. They also help him on occasion though.

Blood Scorn
Another Hellhive from the same clan as Galaxy Vision and Mirror Zone. They initially met on very poor terms and were instant enemies. Later on Blood Scorn had to stay with Dirge's new clan though and the two became "sort of" friends out of mutual boredom.

Blood Eyes, Teethy, Eye Stalker and Eye-Z
Dirge’s four pet Tomb Tongues. They’re a bit like hunting dogs.

Relations with characters not owned by me

Aegis
A bot Dirge met due to a misunderstanding and insisted on hanging out with. They have clashing opinions a lot and Dirge doesn’t understand why he says or does a lot of the things he does, but he considers Aegis a friend anyway. Albeit sometimes a mean friend.

S-65
Dirge’s other bot buddy. Unlike his relationship with Aegis, Dirge and S-65 are “usually” on friendly terms, although they’ve certainly had their moments. Something about the bot seems to trigger an instinctual compulsion to protect it in Dirge. It is unclear as to why specifically.

Random Facts
As with most Helmetheads, a lot of Dirge’s augmentations can be disconnected from his internal wiring via a few connection ports. The only part that can’t, is of course, his face plate which is welded to his face and the collar and bracers all Helmetheads keep as a permanent piece to prevent their necks from breaking under the weight and stress of their heavily augmented heads. Also much like the others though, he doesn’t usually disconnect the augmentations unless something specific requires him to as it disconnects it from his nerves and thus is quite painful.

Dirge, like most Helmetheads, loves being petted and brushed, especially around places trapped beneath augmentations or that are hard to reach, as well as his tail, head, and ears.

Ironically Dirge absolutely hates having his tail touched, but if you can manage to start petting it before he has a chance to get mad about it all is fine.

Dirge tends to be drawn more towards interacting with robots rather than his own kind. He’ll try to befriend most anything though.
