Ambulocetus natans by Viergacht

Ambulocetus natans

Viergacht

A walking whale from Pakistan, 50 mya. Most of the restorations show Ambulocetus as a shrinkwrapped otter/crocodile-looking thing - I wanted to put some fleshiness on it. The color is inspired by leopard seals.

Well if it's described as a "walking whale" (as the name seems to suggest) then fleshiness seems a fair enough idea :) I'm guessing those things were probably kind of big. The leopard seal-inspired patterning works, and love the swirly water colours.

I like this take, as some restorations dont' take blubber which pinnipeds and the modern whale orders have in abundance.

And blubber inspires a lot of 'yo mama is so fat' jokes.
