UPDATE! REVISED! ;)

Midnight glided leisurely along the rooftops, in no real hurry to get anywhere. She knew that he would wait for her, so she took her time, enjoying the cool breeze and the view of abandoned houses and sprawling trees. The line between the two was once distinct but had become increasingly blurred with the passing of the years, and Midnight was beginning to lose sight of where one ended and the other began.
“You’re late,” came a familiar voice, tinged with just a hint of boredom and annoyance. Midnight recognized the voice immediately, as it was one of the only voices that she ever heard.

Midnight looked up to see Blaze sitting on the highest spot on the roof, his eyes fixed on the forest ahead. He was obviously surveying the landscape, evaluating the many routes available to them for their evening hunt. His fur shined brightly in the fading light, as if on fire. Regardless of the time of day, the sun had never failed to remind Midnight of why Blaze had been so named. He practically glowed, even in the failing light.

“I said: rooftops at sunset,” he said with the slightest hint of exasperation.

“It’s sunset, and I’m here,” Midnight said, smiling as she strode the shingles below him. Blaze turned to face her.

“Either you have an unfortunate sense of timing, or you just don’t care about eating,” he huffed. “Remember. We need to get as much food as we can before the wolves or feral dogs head out themselves.”

Midnight did remember, all too well, her first encounter with a feral dog. She was just a kitten. Her mother had been killed, and her siblings were taken away one by one by large birds. She had almost become food herself, but Blaze had swept her up in the nick of time, taking her to safety. He had looked after her ever since, and she had looked to him as she would a big brother. If Blaze was her brother, however, then he was a much older brother. Blaze was getting old and was starting to show his age. His eyes weren’t as strong as they used to be, and Midnight had to step in to shoulder more of the weight of survival. It was Midnight’s duty to look for the toughest prey hiding in the darkest of places. Blaze’s eyes might have glistened as brightly as the sun, but the moon’s pale ivory light favoured the eyes of Midnight.

Midnight frowned and looked outward towards the forest, which sometimes gave off an unnatural red gloom. “Do you think human’s will ever come back?” She asked.

One of Blaze’s whiskers twitched, as they often did whenever Midnight asked these sorts of questions.

“Man’s misfortune was caused by their own actions. It was their own fault that they had to flee their homes in the first place. This place has been damaged forever. They know that they can’t live here. Not for a very long time, in any case.”

“So, why do we?” She asked. “If this place is bad for them then it’s bad for us, isn’t it? The food we eat, the water we drink, and the places we sleep… We should leave too.”

Blaze shook his head. “We could, but I don’t think it would be best. We’ve been here for too long, and I believe the things we’ve eaten and the water we have drank has already contaminated us.” He chuckled a little. “You might not feel it, but we’re probably walking disasters ourselves.” Blaze looked back out towards the horizon. “I would hate to spread it.”

Midnight said nothing for a while. Instead, she followed Blaze’s gaze out towards the trees. She could see birds flying in the distance. The idea that she might be sick and not even know it made her feel uneasy about going hunting. It had for a while. It could have been the reason why she always showed up late for their hunts. Still, she would be turning five seasons old this summer, and she had never been sick all her life. Maybe it wasn’t so bad for animals to live here. After all, she had seen many other species wander these lands, and they all seemed fine. More importantly, what would happen to her adopted big brother if she didn’t provide him with her sight.

“You ready?” He asked.

Midnight looked at him. “… Ready,” she said. “And I promise I’ll be on time tomorrow.”

Blaze smiled at her. “Good,” he said. “After all, only the strongest survive here.”

Together, the two leapt from the rooftops and dashed into the wilds ahead.

I will like to point out that I am NO WRITER. I don't write stories and my grammar probably sucks major cat hair balls compared to people who actually can write. Plus, over a couple of years I have come to believe that I have a bit of a speech impediment and I tend to write sentences on how I would say them out loud. So take this little story with a grain of salt.
(Thats why I had a english major do some serious major revision) ;)

ON TO THE PICTURE!!! I first started out playing with warm colours, then added a silhouette that looked like a building. Then one thing lead to another and as a result I ended up with this picture. As I was finishing up on it a short story began to roll around in my head so i threw it out there for fun. Again, take it with a grain of salt. I'm not writer.

Enjoy the pic! :D

Ooh I like this, both the painting and the story that accompanied it. I'm very curious about this sickness Blaze is talking about. I love, love the painting - the lighting, the texture of the wood, the fur details on the cats (especially Blaze). Marvelous stuff~

Thank you very much Serran! I'm glad you like both the painting and the story. The story was a last minute thing that bounced up when I completed the pic. It wasn't so much as a sickness. But an unfortunate event happened which gave the humans no choice but to leave. I'm very happy you like it. :D I'm doing my best to stray from lines and do more painterly styles. :)
