Mendocino- Weeping Virgin and Father Time by Threetails

Mendocino- Weeping Virgin and Father Time

Threetails

This sculpture sits atop the Masonic lodge in Mendocino, California.

According to "Illustrations of Masonry" (Morgan, 1827) the meaning of this symbol is as follows:

"The weeping virgin denotes the unfinished state of the temple [of Solomon]; the broken column, that one of the principal supports of Masonry had fallen; the book open before her, that his memory was on perpetual record; the sprig of cassia, the timely discovery of his grave; the urn in her left hand, that his ashes are safely deposited under the Sanctum Sanctorum, or holy of holies of King Solomon's Temple, and Time, standing behind her, with his hands infolded in the ringlets of her hair, that time, patience and perseverance will accomplish all things."

The exact symbolism is somewhat more complicated, but I can't be bothered to explain all that. I'm not a Freemason myself but I do know a little bit about Freemasonry.

Also, sorry, it was right side up in my computer but Weasyl decided to monkey around with their settings I guess and now nothing in a portrait orientation will upload right-side up.
