Evergreen Aviation Museum- Sopwith Camel

Threetails

This is a replica of the famous WWI aircraft that made the RAF a fighting force that could go head-to-head with the "Fokker Scourge."

Beginning in the summer of 1915, Germany fitted several Fokker planes with machine guns. Up to this point aircraft had been used purely for observation but pilots and photographers had begun carrying sidearms and exchanging gunfire. Mounting a machine gun to the plane turned it into an offensive weapon.

The allies were at a loss, and took a lot longer to develop proper fighters. The Sopwith Camel was one of the British entries, beginning operation in 1916.
