Rebound page 163 (critique requested)

TheScatterbrain

On the website here: http://www.biblecomic.net/archive/rebound-page-163/

I'm uploading a bigger version because, well, look at it :V

I have stared at this for so long that I feel absolutely nothing for it anymore, except that wow, if I had to do it over I would do a lot of things differently.
In that same vein, feel free to critique the shit out of this. Drawing city settings is a learning process for me.

That top panel is lovely! The level of detail must have been your worst enemy for the time you spent on that. The perspective looks great, too, which is always tricky to nail where there are organic people shapes mixed in.

I do think that while the panel is lovely, the very fact that it's all detailed and vividly colored detracted from it a little bit. I didn't notice the teleporting glowy characters until my second pass-over. It might have served you to turn the value down on the color in that area, like they were a point draining color away from there, if you understand what I'm saying. That way, the glowing characters would really pop out against the quieter BG.

Yes, that is my main issue with this page - I didn't think it through how much they would drown in the detail level/colours of the rest of the panel. Hmm, but desaturating the area is an idea I might try out. I attempted a lot of other things to remedy the issue, like darkening or desaturating the other end of the panel, but it just killed the overall look of the page. For some reason it didn't occur to me to switch it around :P Thanks a bunch!

You're welcome! Glad I could possibly help a bit ^^ I've been reading up on comic page creation and layout, and it's really helped me a lot. If you haven't already checked it out, Scott McCloud's "Making Comics" book was a real treat. It's a fun read, and really opens your eyes to the possibilities you have when you lay out a page.

Yeah I've read it a long time ago, it's a neat book for sure :) Still one of the classics as far as comic making goes.

Oh! On further inspection, no I haven't read that book. I thought you were talking about "Understanding comics", but this is a newer one I didn't even know existed. Maybe I should pick it up then :P

Yeah, he actually wrote 3 books; I didn't know until I went to buy Understanding Comics a couple months ago.
