Eldritch, the Mage of Madness by The Canidean

Eldritch, the Mage of Madness

The Canidean

Real Name: Algeron Marshweeve

Superhero Name: Eldritch

Age: 27

Gender: Male

Species: Wolf/Raccoon hybrid

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 173 lb

Eye color: Brown

Hair color: Brown

Physical Appearance: Skinny, long fingers, whispy, poorly maintained facial hair, simple hairdo, mostly lupine shape with raccoon characteristics (mask and tail rings)

Outfits: Trench coat, thin gloves, fedora, domino mask, leather boots

Occupation: Librarian/BOS operative

Areas of Operation: Primarily United States, currently based in Colmaton

Weapons/Items:
-BOS Communicator
-Inhibitor collars and handcuffs
-The Book of Empty Spaces: An indestructible tome, which is light to him, but heavy enough to be used as a blunt object in reality
-Mentometer: A pocket watch with the face changed to a dial, with its position directly linked to Eldritch's sanity. As his exposure to Lacunaean energies rises and falls, the dial moves, allowing Eldritch to keep track of his risk of insanity:
--Green: No symptoms
--Yellow: Mild abnormalities, including insomnia, nightmares, tics, and mild hallucinations
--Red: Symptoms of severe mental illness, including phobias, mania, schizophrenia, major hallucinations, aphasia, and severe depression
--Black: Catatonia. At this point, Eldritch's conscious mind will shut down for one or two days, leaving him completely unresponsive until his sanity fully recovers

Personal Transport: Ford Focus

Powers/Abilities:
-Lacunaean magic: by calling on the powers of unreality, Eldritch can trigger effects in his location. These range from mild effects such as detecting other magic, producing light, and accelerating healing, to more extreme ones, such as restraining movement, generating magical blasts, triggering specific forms of temporary insanity, and temporarily summoning peculiar organisms. He must have access to the Book of Empty Spaces in order to utilize these powers
-5th level black belt in aikido

Strengths:
-Versatility: Eldritch can occupy almost any role in a team, thanks to the extremely broad range of effects that Lacunaean magic possesses
-Lateral Thinking: Eldritch frequently approaches problems from an altogether different direction than other fursons
-Hard-boiled: Eldritch is a born cynic, and not easily disgusted or disturbed, even by things that seem to have no business being real

Weaknesses:
-Power Drawbacks: The stronger the power he uses, the greater the strain on Eldritch's psyche. A low-power spell may result in relatively benign effects, such as tactile hallucinations or frequent nightmares. Extended uses of high-level powers result in increasingly deviant behavior, including delusions, paranoia, and mania. Extended time without using his powers allows his sanity to recover
-Liability: Eldritch, for all his brilliance, can be forgetful and easily distracted. He also occasionally requires intervention when he draws to heavily on his powers, and often warns his team-mates that he might need to be knocked unconscious for the safety of everyone in the area
-Gullible: Eldritch tends to trust figures in direct authority, only finding things suspicious after he has time to think about it

Bio: Born in Columbus, Ohio, Algeron Marshweeve was always a relatively bookish individual. He didn't care much about the teasing he received from bullies. He was often more concerned with whatever was going through his mind at the time. Though he grew better at focusing on tasks and listening to others, he still had a tendency to be "away with the fairies" at inopportune times. When things got too hard for him, he would always retreat to the library, which set him on the path for his vocation.

Then, one day, when he was reshelving books, he came upon a hand-bound tome that clearly had no business being there. Whenever he showed it to somebody else, they insisted that it was completely blank. The hybrid, however, could read words on it plain as day.

And what terrible words they were. They explained that "reality" and "imagination" are products of each other, and that what was reality in one place could be complete fantasy in another. And, worse still, that realities could suddenly end - punctured like cells filled with viruses, the entire frame of reference dissolving into the soup of unshaped imagination known as the Empty Spaces - the Lacunae.

Disturbed by this premise, Al tried to destroy the book. However, no matter what he tried, the book neutralized whatever threatened it. He also found that some of the passages allowed him to manipulate reality, at the cost of his own sanity. Resigned to his fate, he registered with a still-doubtful BOS, which promised to help him control himself, and protect him from the baleful influences of his own magic.

He soon proved to be, in the words of Atomic Ape, "as annoying as fuck". He would often forget about tasks he was assigned to, and if he drew on his powers too much, as he did during the Chicago Incident, he could become a raving madman, and have to be subdued and separated from the Book of Empty Spaces, or become an ever-increasing threat. The BOS Supernatural Division believes that he could potentially rip himself, and his surroundings, from reality itself. As such, he was rapidly transfered to Colmaton, with the hopes that their high concentration of magic-users could better control him. not to mention getting an irritating bumbler out of his hair.

Personality: Unpredictable. He seems to be mildly bipolar, and can swing from goofy to grouchy very easily. He has a love of everything odd, peculiar, and ridiculous, and has retained his love of books, especially mysteries, biographies, and fantasy. He seems to be completely oblivious to his own sexuality, showing no reaction to all but the most blatantly obvious come-ons. Based on this, however, he seems to be heterosexual, with a preference for athletic, yet busty women. He also tends to be a bit of a know-it-all and a loudmouth. He is quick to apologize for any trouble he causes, however, and is frequently ashamed of failures on his part
