Do You Want To Be A Dragon? (take 1)

tapewolf

My next album is shaping up to be dragon-themed, so here's a song about a very confused dragon hunter. New instruments this time around include a 1967 transistor organ that I fixed up, Behringer's new Solina clone, and it also marks my first foray into playing guitar.

The genesis of this song was seeing the dragonskin bracers in the game Hexen, and immediately thinking "But... I am a dragon, aren't I...?" So I figured I'd write a song around that, preferably involving some kind of dragon transformation concept. Feels a bit like I've recycled the story from "DemonHunter" but there you go.

This was recorded on 24-track tape, with the bass, guitar and vocals tracked on 8-track and dubbed over to the 2" machine when I was happy with them. I will probably redo some of the vocals as they don't sound quite as good to me now as they did at the time. Mixing was done on 1/4" stereo tape and about 3 edits were needed.

Equipment used:

Otari MX80 24-track recorder
TASCAM TSR-8 8-track recorder
Studer A807 stereo master recorder
Lexicon Alex and MX300 effects units
Steinberger Spirit XT2d bass and Spirit GT electric
Teischord C transistor organ
Oberheim OB-X8
Moog Voyager
Korg N1R, Triton Rack
Behringer Solina string ensemble
Ahlborn Archive organ module
Yamaha Reface CP
Alesis DM10 drum brain

Lyrics:

Stealing upon my way
Seeking the beast to slay
Wakes hidden memories - somehow it just seems... wrong.

Take your sword and risk your skin to do the evil dragon in
...But I am a dragon, aren't I...?

Hiss like a thousand snakes
Swiftly the beast awakes
Roaring with laugher - what will come after?
"Hey!"

Here's a pretty dragonskin to wrap the dragon hunter in
...But I am a dragon, aren't I...?

"Don't you want to be a dragon?
Don't you want to be a dragon?
Don't you want to be a dragon?
Don't you want to be a dragon?"

It has begun... I feel the change upon me...
And now it's done... What will become of old me?
What will they say? My family will all mourn...
The price to pay - dragons are made, they're not born

Marvel at my long tail
Gleaming from every scale
Gold I've amounted, scarce to be counted
MINE!

There's no shame in giving in, so come and join the dragon-kin
...But I am a dragon, aren't I...?

Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?

Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be... a dragon?

Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?
Do you want to be a dragon?
