So sofox has been working on a short animation for some time now, and needed some kind of soundtrack for it. So I figured I'd give it a try.
I have literally no idea what a drone transformation sequence should sound like, so I went for something along the lines of System Shock and I think it came out pretty well. The transformation part fell in place quickly and easily, though it took a few attempts to get the first two music cues to sound appropriate.

The finished animation is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XydsjK5uzCc (Latex drone transformation - probably NSFW)

Synthesizers used:
Moog Voyager (opening bass sound)
Korg M1R (vibes)
Korg N1R (lead, pad and sparklies for the second section)
Volca FM (DX7 bass for parts 2 and 3)
Alesis DM10 drum brain (Evil Drums)
Roland M-VS1 (hihats)
DSI OB6 (Gravitron)
Oberheim OB-X8 (Filter sweeps)
Behringer VC340 (vocoder choir)
Korg Triton (Industrial loop at start and beeps)

The music was tracked on 2" tape and mixed to 1/4" stereo, which is probably overkill but who cares?

Did you have to time the soundtrack to hit the transitions in the video, or was there some back and forth? Like, "if the video can hold that scene for another second before cutting away, then the measure can finish and it'll sound better."

Why not mix down to 1/4" 4.0? :D

(Getting Youtube to understand that format is an exercise for the student...)

For the most part, I timed the soundtrack to match the video, but it was largely dead reckoning as the sequencer I used can't handle video. I'd do a quick digital recording of the song at each major decision point and then try and line them up in KDEnlive.

I think the only request I made for editing the video itself was for Sofox to hold the final shot for a bit longer and cut to black on the final drumbeat.

As for doing a quad mix, I don't have any surround systems in the house to test against, let alone mix it

The time-honored way to do that is to get two stereo amps and four speakers. :D Although getting the levels right might be interesting, especially if the amps and/or speaker pairs aren't all the same.
