Both characters derive from an underdeveloped story I call "Phoenix Ashes." It's one of two stories that I'd really like to make into a comic-- if I could only gather the patience to do so.

Haruspex is part of a tribe of creatures known as the Ringori. The Ringori are a canine-like race that stand on strong hind legs and have long snouts with powerful fangs. They are a species deeply involved in sorcery, yet few have seen into their secretive lifestyles to know much about them, leaving their existence enveloped in superstition.

Haruspex is blind, yet a group of strange rats give her insight into the world around her. Each rat has a large red eye somewhere on its side or back. One rat in particular, Scio, rarely leaves her side. Scio acts as her left eye, while visuals she gathers from her right may come from any one of her other rats at will. When a rat's eye is not seeing, it closes up entirely.
