Infodump - Med Division - 2011

Reupload from 2011. Now we're getting into sub-divisions of different Spotlighter types!

After the success of the common/security Spotlighters, Secure Technologies decided to branch out and create different divisions for altogether different tasks. These guys are the medical division, and are basically like a heavy-duty, walking first aid kit- they're typically employed in areas where the threat of personnel injury is a concern or areas where it's useful to have medical assistance on-hand, and can even be brought out in case of disasters or mass injury to lend additional support for medical personnel already on the scene. They're programmed with basic anatomical and medical knowledge, as well as an extensive first-aid database for various injuries. While they're certainly not certified to be able to perform fine surgery by any means, they're actually very good when it comes to tending minor-to-moderate injuries like gashes, broken bones, or removal of minor shrapnel or foreign objects from wounds; and in cases of more serious trauma that's beyond their capabilities to fix, they know the best methods for stabilizing an individual or stopping serious bleeding until the professionals arrive.

As far as personality programming goes, they all share one thing in common- persistence. While most are fairly friendly about it, they are nevertheless very insistent if they see someone needs their help. The reasoning behind this was that Secure Technologies initially felt that people might be wary of receiving medical assistance from a machine, and may turn down necessary help because of it; their friendly persistence was meant to be reassuring, and to help overcome that initial barrier.

Additional infobits:

- Medical division spotlighters have a tri-split jaw; it can open normally, or the lower mandible can 'split' and flare out, keeping it out of the way while they're tending wounds and maneuvering supplies. This unique jaw-configuration also exposes a third lens on the roof of the mouth (which mirrors one just like it located on their forehead), allowing them to actually see what they're doing while working like this. The lens is also x-ray capable, giving them added knowledge of internal damage or broken bones to watch out for. In addition to the jaw-split, these guys also have multiple prehensile tongues to help with all the supplies they need to deal with while fixing someone; you can't give stitches or wrap bandages one-handedly, after all! So I want you all to imagine that jaw splitting open as wide as it will go, with all their little mouthacles out and wriggling like some kind of eldritch horror; and all the while saying Don't worry, I'll fix that wound for you! 8D

  • The front plates on a medical division spotlighter's chest swing open, allowing access to a compartment filled with whatever equipment they may need. Basic things like bandages, gauze or ointments, to more advanced things like trauma shears, splints and things to stop the bleeding; they come fully equipped to handle whatever problems are thrown at them. All they have to do is just pop open their chest, grab what they need with their mouthacles, and on they go!

  • I'm also toying with a very neat idea my buddy Wyv suggested involving said mouthacles having sensors of some kind, which would enable them to (for instance) detect toxins or certain chemicals in a blood sample, or brush over a wound site to gauge heightened temperature and ergo possible infection. Still need to expand on it as it's a very recent thought, but one I like quite a bit.

BONUS STORYTIME: While Spotlighters have an advanced AI and a good problem-solving heuristics system in addition to their programmed knowledge, this doesn't always mean they come to the 'right' conclusions. A very early... error with this particular division occurred when one tried to assist a man with a broken arm; instead of setting the bone, the Spotlighter in question determined that it would be much better in the long run to replace the 'defective part' for him, since that's the most logical thing to do with robotics- it makes far more sense to install a new piece of hardware than trying to fix an old damaged one that's been compromised, since it's weaker and will likely just break again later! Needless to say the guy wasn't pleased. 8'D HOWEVER, SECURE TECHNOLOGIES WANTS EVERYONE TO KNOW THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN COMPLETELY RESOLVED, AND YOU CERTAINLY DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT HAPPENING A SECOND TIME; furthermore, the guy in question is very happy with his settlement, so it's positive all the way around!
