I notice sometimes when I read historical fiction, the author has a tendency to info-dump all the research he or she did while writing the work in question, and so peoples' dialogue and descriptive passages become kind of awkward and textbooky.
You didn't do that at all; just an expert use of a fish-out-of-water type character. So great job! This was a very good read.
