This Day in History: July 22, 1706

Simonov

On July 22, 1706, commissioners from the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England concluded negotiations of treaty (Treaty of Union) to unite the two kingdoms as one. The union was made official following the ratification of the Acts of Union by the parliaments of both nations on May 1, 1707. Thus the nation of Great Britain was born with Queen Anne as monarch.

The flag shown is that of Great Britain and features the combination of the red English St. George's Cross superimposed over the white and blue Scottish St. Andrew's Cross. The anthros featured holding the flag in this image also represent the two nations with the unicorn being the national animal of Scotland and the lion being the national animal of England.
