Memories of an Unsung Hero by shiftingshadows99

Memoires of an Unsung Hero 1

I found myself running once again from the silent one. He was a reaper, a being of incomparable power that I could never hope to match and I knew it. A demon made to send me into my own personal hell. I refused to resign to my fate though and so I ran from it, hoping to escape.

"This marks the end of any possibly legacy you shall ever leave." The shadowy being told me, "Once I erase you, I shall devour your companions. Silence will fall upon your world and shadows will descend, you have lost, give in and accept it."

Silence fell around us and I realized that I had run straight into a trap, he had claimed this area already, I could hear the screams of torment resounding loudly in my head. I hesitated, unsure of what to do, I was hardly even an adult, this creature though... he was ancient and powerful. He was the creature that had overcome my mother, if someone like her couldn't win, I had no chance.

Whatever, living was a pain anyway, people always force these stupid standards on you. They look up to me like a guardian and I didn't even ask or accept that position. They're such inconsiderate jerks. So why cant I stop thinking about them? Can I really care about such incompetent creatures as these? Man, that is pretty lame, fine, I wont give up. I am the unruly genius, if I fall they will.

"Like hell I'll let you have your way with them, they're my charges, I am the adult here. I am charged with protecting the hopes and dreams of this generation of wardens, I will not let you swallow their light. Their futures will will be a resounding cry of joy that will drown out the silence. I will be there to hear it!" I told him defiantly, "I am unruly Z, genius of the Forest, I will lead them to victory."

The ground began to freeze beneath our feet and I created ice skates around my feet and began to skate circles around him. "Do you think such a pathetic attack will reach me? I can fly you foolish wolf, this kind of attack is meaningless against me."

"Shows what you know," I told him as I began to create ice balls around me, hard ones that would hopefully impact him enough to weaken him. I don't know how long I can last against someone like this, I will have to discern as much information as quickly as possible and hope I can find a weakness. "A pathetic reaper like you isn't enough to silence my wild spirit!" I started throwing them at him.

He let them hit him and didn't seem the least phased by it, he was even able to knock a few away with his wings, damn. No wait... if they cant phase him, why bother. I began formulating a plan based on this theory, it the best I've got.

I started to form larger ice balls, these ones easily the size of basket balls. I didn't just create a few either, I created well over a hundred before I started pelting him with them. Focusing on the perceived weak spot I realized I was probably right. His wings were quick, able to block them even while maintaining flight, he really was something else alright. Still, that's okay with me, he wasn't the only special one here.

"Is that all you have? I had heard the stories about you, I didn't expect the person who felled so many of my subordinates would be this weak."

"Hah, you just keep thinking that." I bent my knees, the ice skates turning into spring loaded boots modified to be able to handle the ice. I had to use the momentum just right, I lept at him, ice coating my fist like a gauntlet. "I don't mind if you underestimate me, I will gladly forfeit my pride for those I have sworn to protect."

I slammed my fist into his wing, cutting the other wing slightly while I was at it. The springs absorbed the impact and before they rebound, I disintegrated them. The sound of the screams inside my head was broken by the reaper crashing into the ice.

"Poor birdy, cant fly without your wings, CAN YOU?" I grinned, I was feeling good about this, I could definitely win this. This was the turning point, no more running from this monster, I will slay this creature once and for all.

I opened my mouth and suddenly nothing came out. "Well done, I will give you that point. You really scored one on me. In exchange, I shall teach you the meaning of silence." The avian creatures wings dissolved and he pulled a scythe from thin air. "You will learn the true terror you incur when you go around throwing rocks at dragons."

Terror is right. My entire body was frozen. For all my talk, I was weak and pitiful in comparison to this creature. No, I cant think like that. What would be the point though, up until now I've masked my fear with bold words and now those were off the table now.

I looked forward and saw it the spear my mother used, with the pink infinity symbol she etched into all of her weapons. I grasped it and suddenly found my lost courage. I knelt down and touched the ice, frozen wolves coming out of it until the ground was no longer frozen. I pointed at him and they began to attack him, all two dozen of them. He was able to brush them aside but one by one, most of them managed to bite him, covering with ice in various place.

That wasn't all though, as he was distracted I slipped behind him I stabbed him, right through the chest. I was aware that such an attack wasn't enough to beat him as I pulled back my spear and jumped to safety. Still, I scored another point on him and I was feeling pretty good. I didn't realize it for a moment but most of the screaming had ended with that blow, in fact, the only scream left was his.

"HOW DARE YOU?!" The monster screamed at me, "Not just once but you've now wounded me twice? Why wont you give up, you cant win against creatures like us, we are the darkness, we come back indefinitely, there is no hope, give up!" He continued mumbling most of it, I wasn't sure he was even speaking to me any more.

I began twirling my new weapon between three fingers, "Look, you're right, we may never be able to eradicate you all. You will probably keep coming back and you may well one day overwhelm us. That aside, as long as I continue to draw breath, I will fight to protect the dreams of my charges. I am Z, the Unruly Genius of the Forest, I refused to be made tame by the likes of you." I picked up speed and began to charge at him.

"Beating me in this way will be at great cost to you, its not too late to back away."

He said, a hint of fear tinged his voice, I couldn't help but smile, it tasted sweeter than honey to me. "I can live with that, you however, I cannot live with. I will not allow you to harm another creature. I will eradicate any of your kind who threaten those I love. Even if my limbs stop working and my fur is dyed red with all of your blood, I will never stop until the day I die." As I was within range I struck down, bearing the hasta with both hands down upon his scythe's blade.

Slowly, cracks appeared, I poured all my strength into it, my hasta finally sliced through the blade and the handle, I slammed my palm onto him, performing the purifying technique I had been taught.

"Stop, if you do this, you will never be able to truly communicate your feelings with them again. You'll never get the chance to connect, you'll be alone for the rest of your life."

"No... even if I can't ever communicate how I feel with them or parts of the truth, I know they will always accept me. Even if they don't, I will protect them anyway. Children are such ungrateful brats, I don't really expect them to ever be appropriately grateful of anything I do. Yeah, I think I can manage it." I finished the spell and watched as he disintegrated into nothingness, breathing a sigh of relief for the first time in at least a month, it was finally over.
