Wanted to test out what it'd look like to make a pfp that takes the entire gameboy screen w/ the usual nostalgic gameboy color palette constraint.
So made myself one :3
Very happy how it turned out but surprisingly I think making a headshot this large was just as hard or even harder than making a fullbody.
This is the largest canvas I ever used for pixelart headshot. Interestingly I find pixelart gets hardest if you aim for a canvas bigger than you'd need (like this) or too small.
Too small you have to make tough compromise to convey details, abstract a lot of them by trial and error and subpixel wizardry. This also means if you have a limited palette you don't have much space to convey shade through dithering (though I don't usually use dithering much anyway).
Too big and you have more pixels than you really need. It's tempting to go all in on texture but you'll end up with a less defined structure and will need to clean up a lot more after. Briefly on this one for example I tried adding texture all over the face fur too but realized it was getting too messy and decided to really only keep that to emphasize the mane and inner ears floof and some shy dithering on the paw pads.
