Improvised this doodle I'm very happy with on stream.
Initially just wanted to do some limited palette challenge (gameboy) with my OCs (Kate and Léon here for some reason)
Then also decided I wanted it to look like a game mockup for fun and didn't know what else to add than a dialog box + portrait so I ended up defaulting to cool robot and that itself cemented what the dialog would be lol.
On top of the limited color palette, wanted to experiment how small do i like big-ish sprites, the answer is 36px tall; 30 wide (Kate's silhouette in the distance; 37 if you count the outline).
Learned though that the gameboy sprites are more limited in terms of quantity and or size than I expected, sadly this is slightly too big to be practical :
- You can only have a total of 40 animated sprites in memory at a time (you can do tricks for that though)
- More interestingly and as a harder limitation, you can line up on the same row 10 individual sprites of at most 8 x 16 each (Though on top of tiles that are static so you can do some tricks there) Which makes Kate an awkward 3 sprites high and a ridiculous 4 wide (So could only animate 6 more sprites (48px wide!) on the same row as her).
