The Zhiao Family name is one of standing, with a long history of financial, social, and magical might and with it, political power.  Magic was the basis for the Zhiao family Dynasty, having a large family of innately powerful magic users.  The strong magic ran primarily through the women in their family, though there were enough notable males to make this just a theory.  While the family of Vibra were blessed with high magical ability, those with said ability were also born with extremely reduced sight- moreso than the average Vibra.  This 'curse' causes the young Zhiao to lose their sight completely before finishing grade school.   But as magic itself began to dwindle, so did their power, though not nearly as much as one would have thought.  The Zhiao name had been so deeply entrenched, that even when their magic began to fade, they were still considered apart of the elite class, and treated thusly.

Rayel was born until this world of high class and entitlement and hated it.  She had no interest in the political machinations of the different families, and often spoke publically against them.  She could care less who was arranged to marry, or divorce whom.  She was a tomboy at heart, finding solace in the forests upon her lands as often as possible.  This was not as often as she would've liked, however, as it was she who inheirited the Gift of High magic.  After multiple generations of no particularly strong magical user, the Zhiao hamily line rejoiced at the birth of one whose magical aura could be visibly seen by all.

Rather than study purely magic, Rayel found she had both an aptitude and an extreme interest in Alchemy and to a lesser degree, chemistry.  

Regardless of her desires, Rayel understands that there still duties responsible of her as a member of her family, and will perform them reluctantly, if she's not being forced to.  One such duty was to attend formal functions, and Cotillions as they occur.  It was at one of these functions that she happened to meet Alta.  Rayel sees Alta as her polar opposite, and initially wanted nothing to do with her.  Not having many friends, she felt uncomfortable around the bubbly ditz, but also a growing attachment.   Alta refused to 'go away' and eventually Rayel grew quite fond of her new friend.

It should be noted that Rayels 'rings' did not form until sometime after moving to the E c'amoth, with Alta.

This outfit is Rayels uniform for her job as a alchemist/part-time waitress in Nyota's Establishment. At some point during her studies of a particularly rare haze-worm experiment, she received a call from Alta stating how she had planned to save her family's business by booking transport to some distant space station for a business meeting. Knowing Alta's predilection for getting herself into trouble, Rayel pulled some strings, by seeking aid from an old friend of her great Grandmother, A resourceful snow leopardess going by the name of Nyota. After explaining the situation, she was able to procure two 'safe' tickets to the space station, E c'amoth where Alta was able to successfully conduct her business. After arriving, the two young ladies decided they would like to stay on, and forge their own way in life, supporting each other as needed. After speaking again with Nyota, Rayel was given room and board in exchange for her services as an alchemist, and taking a position as a part-time waitress at Nyota's establishment.

Due to her high magical ability, and her family's inherited 'condition', Rayel is completely blind. Even merging with another will not return her sight at this point. This has not been much of an issue in Rayel's life, however, as it's a common trait within her family, and they have since developed heightened senses to work around their handicap. Rayel excels at hand to hand combat. Rayel is also a worshiper of Safta, the Zyrri Goddess of Magic, though this religion has fallen out of popularity over the years.
