1k word challenge - Sacrified? To Cthulhu? by reedman

Some people would be terrified of this type of situation. What James felt went beyond fear. He wasn't sure if there was a word for what he was feeling. His chest heaved with anxiety. His body trembled with fear. He was in the back seat of a humvee. Right behind the driver's seat. There were three others in the vehicle. Next to him was a soldier. He was wearing standard camo. All he knew about the man was that he had a pistol, and he threatened to shoot James if he ran. The two guys in front wore black button up shirts. He didn't know their names either.

It was crazy to think how the past week had gone. It had started so quietly. Just another Sunday. News had been going around about earthquakes off the east coast near New York City. Quakes coming from the water weren't normal for the area. By Tuesday, the quakes got bad enough that people living in New York City were told to evacuate for their safety. On Wednesday at one am, they learned the source of the eartquakes.

Cthulhu. The monster of Lovecraftian horror. He came out of the water. The United States Military attacked him for three days nonstop. Apparently the being was so massive, none of their weapons hurt him. By Saturday, they government was ready to call in a nuke. On the news, he learned it was called off at the last second. Out of nowhere, the giant started speaking English. He had one request in exchange for peace.

Now it was Sunday night. Here he was, in a humvee with government goons. James was practically dragged out of his apartment in Chicago. They only made stops for bathroom breaks, gas, and food. They drove to New York City nonstop, taking shifts in driving. They didn't talk much. He was too nervous to say or ask anything. When he looked outside, he would occassionally see the military closing off parts of the roadways for them.

He wasn't sure why he was being taken to Cthulhu. Was he a sacrifice? Why him? Couldn't they have grabbed a random prisoner? He was clueless what he had to do with this monster. For whatever reason, the government seemed keen on getting him to the Lovecraftian horror as fast as possible.

After several long hours, James could see New York City approaching. It was strange to see the concrete jungle in the state it was in. Abandoned. Most of the lights were off in the buildings. The street lights were all that lit up the streets. It felt ominous. Almost as ominous as the dread that laid ahead of him.

Finally, they came to the coastline. The beach was covered in tents and lights. People in military uniforms and lab coats were milling about. The car was parked, and everyone got out of the car. James didn't even have time to stretch his legs. The soldier was pushing him along. They made their way to the largest tent in the middle of them all. A man in a much nicer uniform approached them. "Is this the man?" he asked. The soldier saluted before answering.

"Yes general." The soldier said. "This is James Averson, as the creature requested." With a wave of the general's hand, the three government goons were gone. James stood there nervously. The general was still staring at him intensely.

"The fate of the world at stake, and our hope lies with some civvie from Chicago." the general grumbled. "Follow me." James followed the general. His legs were still sore from sitting for so long, but he ignored it. They walked past the numerous tents. They stood just before the water."We've thrown everything short of a damn nuke at him. He took almost a hundred missiles to the face. Not so much as a scratch. Out of nowhere he starts speaking perfect English. He said to bring us James Averson of Chicago by midnight." The general turned to James, a grim facade over his face. "I don't negotiate with monsters, but I have higher orders. Frankly, Cthulhu's reasoning for wanting you is infuriating. It was a waste of military resources. Stay right here Mr. Averson, a boat will be here to escort you."

The general left. He went back to the tents. Soon, a vehicles drove towards James from around the tents. It looked like the amphibious car he saw in the news last week. He was told to get in. He sat in the boat with another soldier. After a few minutes, they were far away from the coast. Open water on all sides. They approached another boat. The soldier got out of the amphibious car, and into the boat. They drove off, leaving James by himself.

Suddenly, the water began to rock back and forth. He held onto the side of the vehicle for dear life. Then, a great force nearly pushed James flat into the floor. He was going up in the air! How?

Looking around, he realized. He was in a hand. In the moonlight, it looked green. It linked to an arm. The arm, was connected to the source of what lifted him up.

It was him. The thing he dreaded. He was beyond massive. Cthulu's face alone encompassed his entire view. His yellow eyes focused on James. They were glowing, and the light shined on him. The face tentacles Cthulhu had slithered about with excitement.

"I'm so glad the military listened to me." his voice boomed. "I was looking around the Earth for the perfect boyfriend. You fit the profile to a T!"

James was coaxed out of the vehicle, which was tossed away. The world was at stake because a creature of pure horror wanted a boyfriend? It was a bit much to take in. He knew he had two choices. He could reject being the boyfriend of a planet destroying monster. Option two was to try and make it work.

Well, it beat the apartment in Chicago.
