Green Iguana Facts

Red Dragonette

This sign was at the Gumbalimba Park in Roatán, Honduras and I think it was right by the spot with the iguanas. Here's what the sign says if you can't read it:

  • It is a cold-blooded herbivore reptile.
  • Adults can grow up to 6 ft. long.
  • They reach sexual maturity at 16 months of age.
  • Mating occurs between February and March.
  • The gestation period is 2 months.
  • One adult female can lay up to 60 eggs.
  • The incubation period is between 60 to 90 days.
  • Natural enemies, other than man, are cats, large rodents, snakes and birds of prey.
  • Iguanas are diurnal animals. They spend most of the day in the trees eating and sleep at night.

"These iguanas are protected within Honduras. If offered these iguanas in a dish to eat, please know that is illegal, and say NO!"
