THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE SURPRISES OF 2022 ANIMATION

and even a colossal MEH...

here we go:

THE BEST:

THE BAD GUYS: OH DEAR LORD OF FURRY, WHAT AN AMAZINGLY GOOD MOVIE, the best of 2022 in terms of animation, character design, story and love for the media. the most hyped furry movie of 2022 became the best furry movie of the year. FLAWLESS, nah, it has a couple hicups (lenght, tropes and lack of character development for diane foxington....just a little, she is still an amazing female character.)

visually, this movie is perfect, THIS IS HOW 3D ANIMATION MUST LOOK LIKE. the bad guys and spider man spiderverse movies must be THE CANON FOR CGI ANIMATION. we dont want more toy like looking lame characters created using the FROZEN engine (seriously, disney...enough.) cgi has a lot to offer for animation, and the bad guys is the perfect example of what you can do when you give an actual damn.

THE "OK, I DIDNT EXPECT THIS TO BE AS GOOD AS IT WAS" FURRY MOVIE OF THE YEAR:

PAWS OF FURY, THE LEGEND OF HANK: far from perfect, with a script that hits and misses, BUT THERE IS A SOUL ON THIS MOVIE, character design is very good, different, but cartoony, and, let's be honest, IT'S A FURRY REMAKE OF MEL BROOKS' BLAZING SADDLES, WITH FURRIES, IN JAPAN....THERE WAS NO WAY THIS MOVIE COULD BE PERFECT! but man, it delivered as much as it could, there is a couple of amazing jokes on it, maybe a little too much 4th wall breaking, and a colossal voice acting work. a very good beggining, apparently, there will be a sequel. so, we hope they embrace the idea and explore it properly the next time.

THE "THIS ONE IS WAY BETTER THAT THE KUNG FU PANDA SERIES" SERIES OF THE YEAR:

ABOMINABLE AND THE INVISIBLE CITY: loved it. too short for my taste, considering the amazing concept they are giving us, and with a final episode as cliffhangerish as possible. this series really captures the amazing spirit of the AMAZING MOVIE EVERYONE MUST WATCH AND LOVE BECAUSE THIS IS A VERY GOOD MOVIE AND DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE AS UNDERRATED AS IT IS, DAMMIT! but yeah, this series is a good example of how to expand the universe of a movie...something zootopia writers can take a lesson, or ten, from.

THE " I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE GOOD, BUT IT WAS A LITTLE BETTER THAN I EXPECTED IT TO BE" FURRY MOVIE OF THE YEAR:

SING 2: seriously. this movie had no right to be as good as it was. they actually explore the characters, they expand the casting, give us amazing characters such as porscha (a very welcome change to the bratty daddy's girl cliche) and jimmy crystal (even if underdeveloped, he must be a recurrent character) and even an adorable gay character (come on...jerry made it clear he is gay, and he loves it.) and yes....SING 2 MADE A BETTER LGBT REPRESENTATION WITH JERRY THAN DISNEY DID...ok, seriously, THIS YEAR, DISNEY DID NOTHING RIGHT...which leads me to...

THE " HOLY CRAP, THEY JUST DIDNT DO A DAMN THING RIGHT" STUDIO OF THE YEAR:

DISNEY: ok...THIS IS THE FIRST TIME EVER, IN MY LIFE, THAT I TOTALLY FEEL DISNEY JUST KICKED ME IN THE BALLS REPEATEDLY AND THEN SPAT OVER MY DEAD BY TESTICULAR CONCUSSION BODY. HOLY CRAP, WHAT A TRUCKLOAD OF POOP DISNEY DUMPED ON US THIS YEAR.

TURNING RED: no....there is no way you can convince me this movie is good, IF YOU LIKED IT, COOL, GOOD FOR YOU, YOUR RIGHT, YOUR TASTE. I STILL LOVE YOU. but...turning red, for me, feels like a very bad idea, executed very poorly. OH YES, CHARACTER DESIGNS ARE PERFECT (they must be, they basically look like made by 80s ghibli...duh...) i mean, the red pandas look like the cousins of the tanukis from POMPOKO WARS. and you may be thinking " why is joe complaining so much about disney characters looking like ghibli designs?" simple, cus disney used to be THE COMPANY THAT SET DESIGN TRENDS IN ANIMATION, THEY TOLD EVERYONE ELSE HOW CHARACTERS MUST LOOK, but now...they are walmart ghibli, yes, i said it, i keep it, and turning red is the best example. i mean... MOVIE ABOUT MENSTRUATION, SERIOUSLY? once you realize that, the tittle, turning red, takes a very....carrie white like tone (if you get the reference, sorry for the terrible mental image) this movie is the best demonstration of my creative axiom...

JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DO OR SHOW SOMETHING ON A STORY, DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO DO OR SHOW IT, A REAL WRITER MUST KNOW WHEN TO REIN HIS IDEAS IN. not all stories need to be told. not all ideas are good just because they are different.

turning red is basically a movie about underage girls having their period (on a very romaticized way...i have 2 sisters, and a lot of female friends, and believe me, there is nothing romantic or funny about menstruation and the period, it is, in fact, a very painful experience, even traumatic.) and make a movie where you cartoonize it, just because you think it is "representative", is perhaps the worst idea ever. again, THE MOVIE LOOKS ARE PERFECT, CHARACTER DESIGN IS GREAT, I OWN THE ARTBOOK AND I LOVE IT. but. AS A MOVIE, TURNING RED IS A HUGE NONO...but, at least, this movie left me something, unlike...

THE BIGGEST "VANILLA BLAND" MOVIE OF THE YEAR:

STRANGE WORLD: wow...just wow...this movie, there is nothing right about it, ok, THE DOG'S DESIGN IS SUPER COOL, AMAZING AND PERFECT. and...that's it, cus...the dog does nothing in the movie, AT ALL. you know when in a movie you go " the movie was bad, but this character was funny" thing? strange world doesn't even has that, the characters are all so forgetable and irrelevant....i mean, DISNEY MADE ATLANTIS, it aint like they dont know how to make a movie about exploring new and different worlds...THEY MADE TREASURE PLANET, DAMMIT, DISNEY KNOWS HOW TO DO IT (and yes, i know treasure planet flopped...we were very stupid back then.) so...why strange world failed so hard? simple...TERRIBLE SCRIPT, TERRIBLE CHARACTER DESIGNS, BLAND AND LIFELESS ANIMATION...the least spirited movie ever...feels like they just did it for the schedule. or taxes....i dont know. i forgot about this movie the moment it ended.

but there is something disney did this year i just cant forget...

ZOOTOPIA PLUS: no chapter name, cus i have issues with this thing.

ok...zootopia plus. the hype is gone, i already watched the eps a couple times each, and i must say...THIS HAS NO DAMN RIGHT TO BE CALLED A SERIES, OR EVEN A SEQUEL PREQUEL TO ZOOTOPIA, these shorts are dvd extras, i mean...you can add these clips to the movie, and make a extended edition, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH BETTER DEAL. instead, we get these shorts, VERY WELL DONE, OF COURSE. but...after 6 years, this is all we get? i mean...WE GET TURNING RED, SOUL (a movie not even worth mentioning for me, pure pretentious crap.) STRANGE WORLD...BUT NOT THE ZOOTOPIA SEQUEL WE FREAKIN DESERVE AND HAVE LITERALLY YEARS BEGGING FOR? i needed evidence that today's disney hates me, zootopia plus is that evidence.

again, the shorts are very good (even if they do the crap they did with clawhauser and bogo, THE ONLY LGBT COUPLE WE ALL WANT IN DISNEY, AND RUIN IT BY USING THE "IT WAS A DREAM" TROPE...UGGGGH!) and the mister big short (the absolute best of the series, in terms of style and character development, and hey, it's even a homage to one of the best movies of all time, an absolute 10 for me) the fru fru and tru tru short, a very good idea...terribly executed, the duke weaselton short, that only validates the WEASELS WILL ALWAYS BE EVIL cliche (in the zootopia universe, a universe based upon the idea that animal archetypes can change...) and the hopps short, that, even if funny...feels flat because it adds nothing to the characters, these shorts were an amazing chance to expand the universe of zootopia, and correct the movie's main mistake, lack of secondary character development. instead...we had dvd extras, that's all zootopia plus is, dvd extras, but hey, at least, they were honest about it, THIS AINT NOTHING NEW, THIS IS JUST EXTRAS FOR THE MAIN MOVIE....A PLUS, FOR ZOOTOPIA. what a load.

so, yeah. other movies worth mentioning are:

SONIC 2 (ok, not fully an animated movie, still very, very, very good.)

LYLE LYLE CROCODILE (not as great as paddington, but, dear lord, the damn thing wants to be entertaining, and it is.)

DC LEAGUE OF SUPERPETS, a movie i really enjoyed and like as a dc fan (a very good surprise, but...considering that james gunn is basically deleting all the dc content now...the best is to forget this movie, cus there wont be a sequel to it. )

CHICKENHARE: an absolutely good surprise, tropey as all heck, but, great character designs, and very good animation.

MY FATHER'S DRAGON: meh...sorry, i dont like pretentious movies where sad endings are good becasue they are MATURE AND REALISTIC (you know, like boy and the beast, fuck that movie and fuck mamoru hosoda ten times...the creator of the leomon must die trope, and the guy who killed the wolf on wolf's children by drowning him on a gutter, cus drama, asshole.) andthis movie reeks of pretentious. BUT, visually, is a very nice spectacle.

so, yeah, even if disney just had the worst year of its history, animation itself gave us many good surprises, maybe, this is the trend to follow, forget about today's disney, and start looking at the new talents, the real talents, the underdogs, the guys who really love animation. 2023 is soon to be here, here's hoping animation brings a lot of goodies, cus god knows we need them.
