"Perhaps a life worth living" Pt 1 - Prologue and Day 0

This story was originally from a series of short stories set in an alternate future setting known as 'Hybrid World'.

A human man and a Hybrid girl are forced together under less than favorable circumstances in a place of oppression and control. Can they move beyond a terrible beginning and learn to understand and trust one another?

In this part, we meet our protagonists:

• Peng (50,M) A human, mid-level bureaucrat, whose snap decision has landed him a responsibility he does not want.
• Xiao (14,F) A fox-type Hybrid, left in a cage to starve, whose desperate plea for help has landed her in a new, even more terrifying place.
