McDerpy (2011)

Ponygirl

(Originally posted November 5, 2011)

...The name IS "PONYgirl," after all. <XD

To illustrate just how little side time I tend to have, this is one of my only "for-fun" art projects I've actually been able to complete recently. <XD And the McDonalds toys were released back in what, January? I still feel like they were the strongest release of the whole toy line, sculpturally speaking. The actual FIM toys' proportions are way off. If I had more initiative I think I would have fixed the legs on Derpy here but I wanted this to be a simple repaint job (which...yeah, didn't get it finished much faster, sigh).

Customized McD Rainbow Dash with new Apoxie mane and tail, painted with acrylics and pastel shading for the eye gradient. :)

This is a gorgeous and lovely rendition of Derpy. You did a wonderful job altering the McD pony. Great work in her eye colors.

Thanks! For some reason, the eyes are what a lot of people comment on. Wish I had more time for the 'fun' stuff, I have another fanart resculpt that has sat on my shelf for two years...sigh.

Oh man I know that feeling. I do the Warhammer 40K table top painting and I have models sitting unfinished longer than two years >A<. Even some unbuilt or left unfinished.

Speaking of which, what kind of paints did you use for your recreation of Derpy on the Mc. D toy?

I think it's mostly Golden brand acrylic paints since they have good coverage and low viscosity so they don't show brushstrokes so much. Thinning the paint to about the thickness of heavy cream also helps with that, the brushstrokes sorta smooth out when the paint is thin enough.

Oh, the EYES though, those were first done in flats with the acrylics, (white, light yellow), then I dusted a few layers of orangey-brown pastel dust alternating with matte clear spray on for the eye gradient, then I added the black pupil and white highlights over that. The eyebrows/lashes were drawn on with a black archival Micron pigment pen, because why deal with the bloopiness of a brush? Haha.
