Santa Fe #3751

PereMarquette1225

Built in 1927 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this engine is part of the 3751 class 4-8-4 Northern locomotives of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (and the very first of her kind). The locomotive is mainly used in passenger service until 1953; and was ultimately retired 4 years later. She is put on static display at a park in San Bernardino until 1986. Then, in 1991, she moved under her own power for the first time in 34 years.

Her career in excursion service began in December of that year when she pulled a recreated California Limited passenger train from Los Angeles to Bakersfield and back. Then, in 1992, she made an 18 day voyage hauling the Santa Fe Employee Special from Los Angeles, California, to Chicago, Illinois, and back again.

On Saturday, July 15th, 2017, I visited Union Station in Los Angeles, and, after all of these years, I finally got to see the locomotive in person; and it is, indeed, beautiful.
