Ozi with cookie - first attempt

Ozimankieknees

I have told people I'm not an artist, here is the proof. My first attempt at drawing an anthro character, pretty much the first go I've had at art since I left school in the 80s

This is actually not a bad first attempt, especially if you haven't done much drawing in 30+ years. It seems like you have a pretty good grasp off proportions and you didn't try to draw anything overly complex, both things I notice with a few of my beginner friends when they come to me for advice (although, the biggest mistake they make is coming to me for advice).

The limbs seem to be the correct length and have the elbows and knees positioned correctly, and you even managed to nail the long body of an otter while still making it look good with the more human-proportioned limbs. Good job!

Sorry it took so long to get to offering any sort of feedback, I'm actually terrible at the whole "constructive criticism" thing and the only advice I can ever really offer is to keep practicing and look to reference images (both "actual" reference material like photos and tutorials, and the works of artists you enjoy personally), eventually things just sorta start to fall into place.

Confession - the reason he is holding a cookie, I was attempting some fan art. I tried to draw Angelo trying to reach a jar of cookies from a high shelf while this character was saying "If you want another cookie you have to call me your highness". As you say over complicated or to put it another way (as I have said before) the simplicity of your style leaves nowhere to hide the slightest mistake - I cannot draw Angelo!

I did watch a very helpful video talking about plotting the proportion before filling in any parts so started with a set of boxes, the head is this size goes here, hands here etc.
I shall take your advise and keep practicing. If I don't freeze my fingers off surveying a stream for a water wheel tomorrow.
