Painting from 2010

The troll reared it’s head, and hadn’t been scared half to death she might have had time to notice the Look on his face, and had she seen It, she would have pitied the poor creature.

Martlet, my sphinx girl, after she migrated North and joined a family of manticores. The manticore by her side is the eldest son and, kind of, her mentor in a new and cold world. His idea of mentoring, however, is introducing Martlet to one dangerous beast after another then showing off by beating the shit out of them. Oh well, that’s manticores for you.

I really love the expressions on these characters. They remind me or really old paintings - especially the sphinx.

Thanks! Sphinx face is very much inspired by Goya's portraits.

Still an incredibly neat picture (and has it really been that long, christ). I'm curious to see if this set of characters has changed in appearance at all over the last few years!

Yes, and way too bloody long since I made a proper sphinx-painting. The characters haven't changed much, not the basic 'core design anyway. I'll see if I can dig up some sketches one of these days.

You draw the best human-faced creatures. I've always adored your sphinxes, and your take on manticores is just as good.

Thanks! Human-faced-animals are my absolute favourite type of mythological creature. Doesn't really matter what animal either, as long as they're properly uncanny valley with that out-of-place head.
