Thank You Mr. Iwata

I still remember the Christmas when I got my gameboy color. It was bright magenta, embarrassingly so because I was at that age where pink wasn't 'cool'. But I kept it with me constantly because of the bright red game cartridge that came with it. Pokemon Red was my first gameboy game and it was the most complicated 'grown up' strategy game I'd ever played. I felt so smart, learning about the status ailments, having my sister be my constant gaming rival, sitting side by side with her doing our best to try and catch them all together with our Red and Blue games. It was how we bonded-- we really didn't get along any other way. The second that any new game came along we'd both show up side by side and slap down our cash on the counter to buy a different version each. I had Red, she had Blue. I had Silver, she had Gold. I had Ruby, she had Sapphire. I had Emerald Green, she had Fire Red. She had X, I had Y. Heck, even with the Legend of Zelda series we both bought Oracle of Ages vs. Seasons to beat it together! It never stopped. Pokemon was what brought us together and made us realize that we could get along, as annoying as we were to each other. It really helped out when my father started being abusive to the family and our only solace was each other.

Thank you, Mr. Iwata. Your games lit up my childhood and made my sister my best friend. I don't think that we've lost you one bit even though you're gone. You're still here, in every game that you took the time to bring to the market and in every smile you brought to peoples' faces. I know that things didn't turn out the way you wanted, like how it was planned with Clefairy potentially being the face of Pokemon... but I think it all worked out in the end. You did great things with your life and influenced thousands.

A couple of people I know have asked why Bulbasaur isn't holding a revive. It's because revival isn't really the message I want to get across. Iwata did so much in his lifetime, working through the hard times and his life has come to a close. Being upset that a story has ended just because it's over isn't the point of a book, it's being able to get through it all and reflect back with fondness in what you got to experience to the final chapter. I hope that makes sense...
