Pose for the Portrait

Nomax

Commission for onyxcenturio and RedNoodle.Inc of their characters. (both to be found on FA)

Bit of a simpler picture compared to the last couple, but it's quite nice to not have to worry so much about how to put all the bits and pieces together and just have a simple one with two characters standing there without too much going on overall.

Your emphasis over realism and authenticity is most certainly appreciated, and I find that worthy of the sweetest ovations as you manage to execute breathtaking, awe-inflicting works that dislocate my jaw, metaphorically of course, and drop it right to the stone floor. Magnificent.

Truthfully, I like how you manage to breath life into the characters presented here, not only through mere appearance and design, but also expressions which feel clad with emotion and a raw strength or determination. Shading is also another think that adds much to the awing sense of realism, as well as the garments and their tattered look.

Wonderfully, executed! This is one fine, sublime masterpiece you have here.

Thank you very much, and thankfully it was only a metaphorical jaw dislocation, would've been rather worried otherwise :P

It is my pleasure, and yes, that would have been quite an inconvenience.

Speaking of which, I am curious... permit me asking: what hobbies or passion would you have?
I have noticed a recurring theme in some of your artworks, may I take liberty in assuming you to be an Elder Scrolls Fan? Or at least a fan of RPG and Fantasy?

Well the Elder Scrolls themed pictures were all commissioned and overall i'm more or less neutral towards that game series. And...well, i'm more a fan of history actually rather than fantasy to be honest, but i rarely get commissioned to draw a Polish Hussar or a Mongol horse archer.

As for hobbies, well we pretty much covered everything already, Drawing is the main thing, followed by gaming and ...well that pretty much covers it.Not too much time for even more stuff :P

A fan of history, you say? Dare I say, monsieur, you now possess the entirety of my attention... and curiosity!

I too am a staunch fan of history, though it may have been obvious already by my avatar, heh.
And Poland's Winged Hussars were one of the most iconic soldiers history came to knew. They really delivered quite a powerful image as well as worthy feats during the Siege(s) of Vienna, if memory serves me right.

Although, in terms of design, the Landsknecht is one type of soldier which sways me most.

What interests you most about history, if I may ask?

            • Link

What interests me most about it? Difficult to really put into words actually, it's , well, in the end history is kind of all encompasing, every type of art is based on what came before it, and so in a way history is like fiction on steroids to me. There is pretty much an endless supply of awesome stories, whether it's about entire periods where almost the whole known world was overrun by the Mongols, or small tales of a scribe in a village, documenting whatever might have happened that drove him to document it. How empires rose and fell, relationships between countries were built and destroyed etc., it's just a giant pile of inspirational stories.

oh, grand. I take it the Mongols phase you? I happen to have a certain appreciation for the Mongol culture and history (as well as other nomadic tribes who had emerged), as well as the Mongol culture of today.
I also got myself some PDF books about Mongols, interesting stuff.

And endless stories, that I can very much agree with, and go even further. I would like to say it is also an excellent fountain of inspiration for literature and other arts too. There are no greater heroic deeds, nor greater characters than those portrayed in history... or civilizations. Rome is a big love of mine, and Babylon... and many others.

And those kind of scribes must be one of the most benevolent Samaritans the world would ever know... history would ever know. Far too many meticulous details such as simple rural lifestyles, social taboos, traditions, and many other things that do not correlated with the area of extravagance and romanticism that great wars, leaders and revolutions occupy.

Now that we hit this tangent, and I hope you do not mind my rambling, dear monsieur, I have to say, I would so very much adore the concept of immortality. I would let go of the vices, needs and constraints of the average human life and wholly embrace immortality, just to sit on a marginal layer of the world and witness empires rising and falling, civilizations forming and crumbling, progress, reforms, breakthroughs and how all these affect the world. It would be truly astonishing.
                Wouldn't you think so?

I don't mind rambling at all, such longer comments are always very much appreciated.

Yes, Mongols are very high on my appreciation list simply for the fact that they are an empire that is so seldomly mentioned and talked about compared to the usual candidates of rome, greece, egypt etc. yet it was one of if not the greatest empires in strength and size that ever was on this planet, to the point where their horse archers are probably the reason we have centaurs amoung our mythical creatures today. So they are prime material for someone who has a rather romaticised view of older military.

As for immortality, nah i think i'd pass. Yes it would be cool to see all that follows from now on, but i'd rather have the party end for me at some point. Eternity is a pretty long time after all.
