“Neither agreeable nor disagreeable," I answered. "It just is."
Istigkeit — wasn't that the word Meister Eckhart liked to use? "Is-ness." The Being of Platonic philosophy — except that Plato seems to have made the enormous,
the grotesque mistake of separating Being from becoming and identifying it with the mathematical abstraction of the Idea. He could never, poor fellow,
have seen a bunch of flowers shining with their own inner light and all but quivering under the pressure of the significance with which they were charged;
could never have perceived that what rose and iris and carnation so intensely signified was nothing more, and nothing less, than what they were — a transience that was yet eternal life,
a perpetual perishing that was at the same time pure Being, a bundle of minute, unique particulars in which, by some unspeakable and yet self-evident paradox,
was to be seen the divine source of all existence.”
― Aldous Huxley

I've been pondering some aspects of art for a while and a recent dive into some of Huxley's writing finally managed to put into words some of these thoughts and experiences. The futility of trying to depict something that will be impossible to be experienced in it's being. Now mayhaps that isn't quite the same conversation with the fantasy artwork that i am focussing on, after all none of this really exists like the objects in a still-life might but i've always had an eye on reaching a certain degree of realism, which tended to pull me away from expression and i think i'll have to a balance that is satisfying in the ways i want it to be.
Over the past two years or so i've gained a massive appreciation for abstract art that i haven't had before, dismissing it with the usual handwaving of it being lesser art to the traditional art depicting themes, topics and whatnot, but their disconnect from objects, stories, figures really makes them fantastic work that depict the simple Is-ness that Huxley mentioned, just the being of colour on a canvas, a slice of the universe simply existing in it's own beauty without the duality of inferring mood, drama, and all the other things we layer on top of a typical painting.
And while i don't plan to become an abstract artist anytime soon ( i suck at human interaction, and would be entirely lost in the world galleries), i do have see if i can get my priorities a bit straighter with my approach to art. Of course it won't be a one day to the next startover sort of deal, and many people might not even notice, or perhaps i simply fail, but i'm just glad that some of those kinda misty thoughts i've had for a year or two by now have been kicked into solidity through his writings.
I'm not even sure if that all makes sense as always these descriptions are very flow of the moment writing with no actual re-reading involved, and overall it's more an explanation of my own thoughts, rather than a roadmap for the future. But yeah, that is essentially the significance of this painting. An attempt at recording something that maybe means something for someone!

Feels almost wrong to tack on the patreon and print stuff, but hey as you all know, if you feel like it you can support me on my weird journey making light appear in and arrangment different colours on your screen.

If you like to get personalized art feedback, or stuff like PSD files, highres and more, or you want to have a print of my work then here are your options.

    Huxley was brilliant for sure. As for meaning, my first thought "who is that stranger?" And that itself opens many possibilities for meaning.
