Hunger Wolf by NoktBane

Hunger Wolf

NoktBane

A wolf pack found in my made up land of Rikt - Hunger Wolves:

They are generally smaller than the average wolf and usually have dark fur, often with some lighter markings. The majority have blue or green eyes; a few have pink/purple. The pack is relatively small in number when compared to the others which inhabit Rikt.

The Hunger wolves are so called because their territory encompasses the Hunger Forest to the south west of Ouintera. The Hunger Forest is huge and it’s tall, dark trees are foreboding - for some reason it is an unsettling sight to behold. Very little light manages to penetrate through the canopy and nothing much can be heard except for an eerie silence. Wandering there for too long can cause the mind to start playing tricks on itself and may eventually lead to madness. The Hunger wolf pack fears this forest and has many superstitions regarding it. Their fear stems from the fact that many of the wolves who enter are never seen again - supposedly eaten up by the forest itself.

Hunger wolves are often seen wearing glowing plants, feathers and other items. They believe that if they wear these they will be able to navigate in and out of the forest safely – to enter without would surely cause one to become lost forever. They obtain these items from the bottom of the Great Rift – also known as the “the underneath”. The Great Rift is a vast fissure which runs through the middle of Rikt and separates Ouintera in the north from Luistra in the south. It is so deep that the sun’s rays do not reach the bottom. The plants and other life-forms within are said to emit their own light and at night a faint glow can sometimes be seen radiating up from the chasm. The sabres believe that the underneath is a gateway to the demon world - no one knows much about what truly lies at the bottom of the rift other than the Hunger wolves, who are seemingly the only ones with the knowledge of how to reach it.

The Hunger wolves prefer not to enter the Hunger Forest unless it is absolutely necessary – and even then they prefer to stick close to the old footpaths which the humans created long ago. Because of this they are often skinny in appearance and in poor condition, due to there not being many prey animals in their territory outside of the forest. There have also been recent sightings of strange figures amongst the trees – the rumour that these may in fact be the ghosts of the humans who were supposed to have all abandoned Rikt centuries ago has made the Hunger wolves even more fearful of entering the forest.

The Hunger Wolf pack tends to be secretive and rarely has anything to do with outsiders - who they regard with the utmost suspicion. They will only ask for help from other packs if they are in a real crisis.
