Pandora/"And Afterward, when the evil thing was already his, then he understood."

nessyo

The character's name is pandora, the title quote is from a greek poem which describes the creation of Pandora, as a beautiful gift to the humans meant to trick them as punishment for going around the will of the gods. Some myths have her opening a box, but in this poem, pandora is the box, is the evil thing which causes men to grow old and sick and die.

It's a bitterly misogynistic view of the world.

This has always fascinated me, so I made a Pandora who is part beautiful and elegant and demure antelope (which, after polling people I knew, was labeled the most elegant and demure of creatures) but also part alligator. She is sweet and lovely, but only once you are drawn in do you realize what "evil" she has to give you: knowledge, which is not evil but is often misunderstood as evil. She's meant to be positive and subversive, but also somewhat bitter and reactionary, which is why i've put her in one of those "demure" poses from an old painting, the Grande Odalisque. But like Manet(?)'s Odalisque, this pandora is accompanied by a cat instead of a dog.

The best media comes to you sweet and whimsical and demure and easy to misunderstand, and only when you're caught up in it do you realize the importance of its message, and perhaps hte most important work of that kind for me is the harry potter book series.

in other news, watercolor hates me.

So I read this entire description and am just at a loss for words. You are incredible. I am amazed that you went so deep and delved so deeply into the Greek mythology and history, and even to the point to look at a painting by Monet and use it as inspiration for your own work. I very much like your take on Pandora, elegant and beautiful yet powerful and deadly all at once. The bit of gator mixed in with antelope seems beyond appropriate. I very much like how she is mostly antelope, but you can see those gator teeth and back. I love that you included the cat, and that it's grooming itself and chilling with her all nonchalant. I happen to love your watercolor work and find this incredibly beautiful!! I cannot paint for the life of me. You rock! <3

aww thank you! :D I'm glad that the art history stuff is meaningful to other people; I really like it and get into it, and it's important to my paintings, but i worry that it gets distracting for viewers sometimes.
