Wolf Through the Crystal by Nashoba Hostina

Wolf Through the Crystal

Nashoba Hostina

Well, time for something a little different!

I love painting on unorthidox things, ranging from boxes to leaves and feathers My personal favorite) however, I decided to do something a little different… paint on a crystal. And, unlike my other paintings, which are viewed from the top layer of paint… this is actually viewed from the bottom layer, through the clear parts of the crystal itself. (The top layer’s black, if anyone’s curious) I did this because I love the way a crystal’s facets bend light and make things appear distorted or broken. Sort of taking a new perspective on painting, I suppose.

Considering that I’m working ‘backwards’ by the way I do things, the size of the piece (here’s its size next to a penny http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Nashoba_Hostina/wolfcrystalpenny.jpg ) and the fact that this is sort of a prototype for later pieces, I think it turned out fairly decently. I need to save up for larger (lengthwise) crystals, but I hope to do more of these in the future, with wrapped handles and the like much like my wands and prayer feathers. This one is a bit too small to build a handle off of the way I’d like to, so this one gets no more ornamentation for the time being. Maybe it will in the future.

I also happen to like the natural foggyness at the base at this one… it allowed me to get sort of a gradient to allow the wolf to fade into. There’s also an odd property of the crystal that has me confused… because at any angle other than looking straight on at the wolf’s eye, it flashes (you can see this in the side facet). I’d like to take credit for this, because I think it’s neat… but it’s actually a fluke and I have no real idea why it does that, just speculation.

Anywho, I hope you guys like it, and thank you so much for looking!
