Stormflight by Nambroth

Stormflight

Nambroth

My half of a trade with Freakhound Studios! It was requested that I paint a Steller's Sea Eagle flying through a snowsquall.

I was asked to use this image by Klaus Nigge as inspiration: http://cdn2.arkive.org/media/91/915CE9C2-6BEA-47EE-AB00-A6E2A229E2A5/Presentation.Large/Juvenile-Stellers-sea-eagle-in-flight.jpg

I hope I was able to create a similar look without drawing too closely from the photograph. Inspired were the colors and pose.

Much like the eagle in the photo, the one I painted is a juvenile.

Ink and watercolor, 8" x 10"

This came out really nice. I love the details and the colors.

I think the biggest thing that stands out to me about this piece versus the photograph is that this bird IS somebody. There is expression, there is intent, there is some amount of narrative, albeit brief. The photograph carries no characterization, and characterization is beautifully presented here.

Oh wow, thank you! I do have a habit of putting a bit of emotion into the faces of critters; for better or worse.
